Originally founded by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent as an offshoot of Beggars Banquet, it swiftly developed into a distinctive label of its own with a strong visual aesthetic (created by designer Vaughan Oliver). They released early, brilliant, albums by Cocteau Twins (and Twins’ side project This Mortal Coil), championed the Pixies, the influential rock band who inspired groups like Nirvana and most of the Seattle grunge movement, as well as releasing varied electronic music that ranged from MARRS, a shock number one in 1986 to Colourbox, the underrated band helmed by brothers Martyn and Steve Young. More recently, they have released albums by Bon Iver and TV On The Radio.
