Before they burst into the mainstream with their self-titled debut, Franz Ferdinand had refined their sound playing underground gigs in a derelict Art Deco warehouse overlooking the River Clyde. So when this, their second album, dropped the post-punk rockers had already served their time, and it showed. While they continued to wear their influences proudly on their sleeves (from Gang of Four to Fire Engines) Alex Kapranos' group never felt like a pastiche. Alongside the angular post-punk urgency of the brilliant single 'Do You Want To' sat the beautiful pysch tinged 'Eleanor Put Your Boots On', proof if you needed it that the group were no one-trick pony.
