Before the lead singer gained rock star pretensions and the obligatory celebrity girlfriend, the High Green youngsters really were a breath of fresh air for the post Oasis indie scene. While Paul Morley and less sussed writers over did the accolades, placing Alex Turner somewhere between Wordsworth and Weller, he really did have a way with words and a witty turn of phrase to match the youthful energy of the music. "Before the hysteria started, the labels would say, 'I like you, but I'm not sure about this bit, and that song could do with this changing...' We never listened," they recalled when their debut took off, and listening back to the album now there is a directness and individuality that remains touching. A classic weighed down by familiarity?
