While the influence of Tom Jenkinson’s abstract drum and bass can be felt strongly in the rightly lauded jazzscapes of producers like Flying Lotus, the one they call Squarepusher has never been one to stay still for long. Jenkinson explains the genesis of the LP. “Last summer a bunch of kids got in contact with me. They were talking about forming an ensemble, which I thought was a ridiculous idea but I was impressed by their perseverance so we met up. Their idea was that they wanted the ‘fantasy group’”. So rather than “trying to be four people simultaneously” Jenkinson turns bandleader and the liberation has certainly given him new ideas with a tour planned and the name of fan Andre 3000 mentioned. And the music here would sit quite nicely next to the music of Outkast but more so the electro boogie of Dâm-Funk. While the heavily vocodered G Funk leanings can get a bit tiring it’s an interesting departure that works best when fused with the eccentricities that we loved him for in the first place.
