The first album by The Cocteau Twins and, as such, feels like a band finding its feet. With throbbing bass drone and electronic drum sound the songs sound stark and bare compared to the lush treatment of their later output. That's not to say that the album is without merit, 'But I'm Not' is fabulously hypnotic with Fraser's almost shamanic chanting and a nod to their future direction but it's difficult to listen to the album without wishing for the trademark guitar wash to appear.
