THE FURTIVE 50, 2009

Welcome to our annual poll, The Furtive 50. At the end of each year, we ask the members of the DJhistory.com forum, as well as our favourite DJs, producers, writers and tastemakers, to cast their rheumy eyes over the previous year's output and let us know what tickled their fancy. This chart is the result. You'll find a wide selection of stuff here, from ambient to dubstep and house to modern disco. The best, in fact, of 2009's electronic and dancefloor output. (Below the chart you'll also find interviews with the top two artists.)

1. Tensnake – Holding Back My Love/In The End (I Want To Cry) (Running Back)
Nothing to do with snakes, everything to do with slo mo dance floor goodness. It is number one for a very very good reason and the man behind the snake is a fan of the X Factor. This is not the reason.

2. 40 Thieves – Don’t Turn It Off (Brennan Green Mix) (Chinatown)
San Francisco by way of New York with a bit of the orient in the mix, Hot Chocolate got steaming in 2009 when mixed with a cup of Green Tea.

3. Floating Points – Love Me Like This (R2)

Edits or re-works have been a big discussion point this year and after much debating it has been firmly decided that no one will ever agree if they are worthwhile or not. With that in mind, this is Magnificent!

4. Shit Robot – Simple Things (Work It Out) (Todd Terje Mix) (DFA)
2009 was the year the sound of old house returned, Terje led the crowd from the bar to the floor, ditching his more known disco sound for straight down the line 4/4.

5. Still Going – Spaghetti Circus/Untitled Love (DFA)
Expectations were high for DFA’s Still Going’s latest single, expectations were easily surpassed! Still going are certainly no clowns.

6. 6th Borough Project – Do It To The Max (Instruments of Rapture)
Low bpms, house and edits were the stories of 2009. This encapsulated all of these in one absolutely brilliant record. The B side is amaze too.

7. Radiohead – Reckoner (Jonny Miller Edit) (Fascinating Rhythms)
Cheeky bootleg that adds some deft drums to the sprawling original, alongside some dancefloor twists and turns. We reckon, it's a hit.

8. Walter Jones – Living Without Your Love/I’ll Keep On Loving You (DFA)
Walter Jones is as mysterious and secretive as this track is immediate. As always DFA produced the goods this year but this might actually be the best of another very good bunch.

9. DJ Kaos – Love The Nite Away (TieDye Mix) (Rong/DFA)

Ignoring the fact they are named after a 1970s fashion police’s nightmare, this is a piece of modern soul kissed with the sort of sun drenched feel that Haight and Ashbury enjoyed on a regular basis.

10. Jack Penate – Tonight’s Today (XL)
Easily One of the biggest surprises of the year was when the Patrick Swayze esq. crooner dropped this track. Leo Zero took the plaudits for his extended edit, second best pop shock of the year. Well Top Pop shock according to this.

11. Pepe Bradock – The Path of Most Resistance (Atavisme)
The Sun Ra of French house hits home with his trademark wonky four-to-the-floor. One of house music's most compelling producers.

12. Azari & III – (Reckless) With Your Love (Permanent Vacation)
90s house... Yep 90s house stylings in 2009, and it never sounded quite so good! Huge synth stabs and a yearning vocal... Silly name but a properly amazing track!

13. Rocha – Hands of Love (International Feel)

First release from possibly Uruguay’s only house label, deep and dark as the River Plate itself and includes a rare Harvey mix.

14. The Invisible – London Girl (Accidental)
Formed from the ashes various punk-funk outfits, The Invisible received a Mercury nomination this year as well as a Top 20 accolade in our chart.

15. House Of House – Rushing To Paradise (HOH)
Long, this is a very long song. Piano led house with and epic breakdown, the sound of a euphoric dance floor at 5am.

16. Precious System – The Voice From Planet Love (Running Back)
Limited is the new black, hyped up to fuck and finally released to mass acclaim, we know someone who has played this in every set since they got their house-hungry hands on it.

17. Soft Rocks – Leave Your Earth Behind (Redux)

This sounds a bit like a horse galloping, but a horse cast from the molten magma of a giant Italo disco ball.

18. Floating Points – Vacuum Boogie (Eglo)
More edits of a loop da loop era, more filters and more deep almost soulful music. Two in the top 50, the boy is defiantly floating on the crest of a wave.

19. They Came From The Stars I Saw Them – Moon Song (This Is Not An Exit)
One of several very good releases on this excellent label. It was the Mungolian Jetset mix that caught most people's ears here and deservedly so.

20. Hunee – Rare Silk (WT)
The standout track from the Tour De Force EP, Hunee manages to straddle the techno, house and soul barriers with ease as Rare Silk demonstrates.

21. Marcellus Pittman – If The Earth Could Talk (Unirhythm)
Mr. Pittman has been making a quiet noise with a succession of releases on his own label culminating in the excellent If The Earth Could Talk.

22. Naum Gabo – Volgograd (Eskimo)

Naum Gabo was a prominent Russian Constructivist sculptor, the essence of his art being the exploration of space without having to depict mass. This, however, is a juggernaut of a synth workout and has nothing to do with him...

23. Empire Of The Sun – We Are The People (Virgin)

Pop perfection from Australia’s often mocked Empire Of The Sun… Pre Balearica styled summer soundtrack sounds. With snow falling this never seemed so inappropriate.

24. Den Haan – Release The Beast (Optimo)

Nothing to do with the Breakwater classic as sampled by Daft Punk, instead an Italo, rock glam hybrid.

25. Bottin – No Static (Italians Do It Better)

Horror disco, dark disco, disco… Whatevs... A welcome addition to the Italians Do It Better stable.

27. Levon Vincent – Six Figures (Novel Sound)
Indiana native Levin Vincent makes uncompromising techno that is as repetitive as it is good. Big in Germany.

28. Joker – Digidesign (Hyperdub)

One of a few Dubstep tracks that made this years 50, dark, slow mo almost R'N'B… spark up that blunt and enjoy.

29. Moderat – Rusty Nails (Shackleton Mix) (Bpitch Control)
Brilliant, brooding music from Shackleton.

30. LeoZero – Bon Bon (Glory’s)

31. Nacho Patrol – Futuristic Addis Abeba (Kindred Spirits)

Ethiopian influenced in name and sound...Haile Selassie riding shot gun with Elroy Jetson.

32. Jonathan Jeremiah – Happiness (Island)

The mix that caused most of the fuss was Quiet Village's with its judicious use of strings and distinct lack of drums. A thing of beauty.

33. Parallel Dance Ensemble – Turtle Pizza Cadillacs (Ism)

Not only is this song ace but is has easily one of the best videos of the year to accompany it.

34. Rogue Cat – Magic Journey (Todd Terje Mix) (Tiny Sticks)
Rogue Cat (aka Dean Meredith from Chicken Lips) received a killer remix courtesy of Todd Terje, himself inspired by Mach's On & On.

35. Peter Kruder – Law of Return (Macro)
The Law Of Return is that rare beast: a house record that is also imbued with beauty.

36. Discosession – TV Scene (Crue-L)
Faithful cover version of the Linda Di Francio classic with top Soft Rocks mix.

37. Amadou & Miriam – Ce N’Est Pas Bon (Bullion Mix) (Because)
Duo from Mali get made over in solid gold style. Definitely a heavy weight remix.

38. Mudd & Ahmed Fakroun – Drago (Claremont 56)

46. Tapesh – Brighter Day (Rebirth)
Highly appealing house tune from the excellent Italian label that really made a splash in 2009.

47. Destroyer – Bay of Pigs (Merge)

An epic tune that recalls the trippier ends of krautrock and, dare we say it, Mike Oldfield with a vocal of deathly beauty.

48. Altair Nouveau – Space Fortress (Solardisco)

Visceral electronic workout with excellent John Daly mix.

TENSNAKE
Tensnake, aka Marco Niemerski, delivered our track of the year for Running Back. We asked him what kind of Tensnake he is and whether it bears any relation to his trousers.

Apart from your own which have been the tracks that you have listened to most this year?
I had a chat about that yesterday; the point is I’m not a regular DJ, so I am not really into the latest stuff always. I have been listening to quite a lot of old stuff, though. I think I should maybe mention one track that has a major influence on a track that is coming out in January on Permanent Vacation. The original track is not exactly a cover but it really inspired it. It’s called What I like from Anthony and the Camp and it’s from I don’t know which year [1986 - Smartarse Ed.] but it’s from the 90s or the late 80s and it’s produced by Jellybean.

As in Jellybean Benitez?

Yeah I really like him, he is cheesy sometimes but there are always good parts in his tracks.

Your name Tensnake, where did it come from?

There is no reason, it was just there it looked good and there was no Tensnake on Google. So yeah unfortunately there is no story behind it, no ten-inch snake!

Is there a story behind the track?

Actually the track is pretty old, like two years old and there wasn’t a particular reason for it; no broken heart story behind it but it was I guess inspired by personal situations and stuff and that’s always a good force to produce some stuff! I just had this line on my mind and it just happened.

This chart is called the Furtive 50. Furtive means to do something with stealth or in secret… What is the most furtive thing you have ever done?

Maybe... Actually I cheated last night in Dublin, I didn’t pay the mini bar.

What is the one thing you wished you had done this year that you haven’t.

Definitely finishing my album and moving my studio, I really need to find a new place.

What is the one thing you need to do next year? Though I guess that is an easy answer?

Yeah I need to finish my album and move my studio… it’s boring isn’t it?

What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you this year?

In the last year the weirdest thing was… I think, well I was pretty amazed at the success of the record on Running Back. That was really weird, I didn’t expect anything and it worked pretty well. I mean I’m number 1 on DJ History now!

I interviewed Greg Wilson a couple of weeks ago and he said that his favourite record of the year was your record.

This is something, I mean I am following podcasts and stuff and Greg Wilson is one of my heroes and it is the best thing that can happen to you when someone like him is playing your stuff.

Sade has a new album coming out. Do you like Sade and what is your favourite track?

What a Beautiful woman! I love her! My favourite track is hard to pick, but it’s a bit obvious and it isn’t a secret or anything but it’s Smooth Operator. I remember when I was little a small boy I always thought I was going to marry her but it never happened. I really was in love with her!

Can a track that is 100bpm be classed as house music?

Yeah definitely! I don’t think in those terms, I mean yeah for sure it’s the way it’s produced, a feeling, the arrangement, the sound. I think that some people need to have these terms to organise things.

So that when they are using Serato it can be filed in the right folder.

Yes... that is house music, put it in the 120 to 130-bpm folder.

BRENNAN GREEN
Brennan hit home in 2009 with, among several other great remixes and productions, his amazing remix of 40 Thieves' Don't Turn It Off. We caught up with him to find out his favourite chocolate and other equally important matters.

Other than your own what have been your favourite tracks of the last year?
I had the pleasure of meeting a man named Baris K while i was on tour in Europe. And his set and collection of Turkish funk has managed to turn my entire record collection into a bunch of flattened plastic. Also seeing Alpha Blondie live in central park was incredible.

How did the remix of Don't Turn It Off come about?

I was in Oakland for New Year's Eve two years ago and Layne played it for me at Corey's place. While listening, comfortably next to Qzen, a warm fire place, and a fresh bowl of cherries I calmly demanded the parts, as I had in my possession at the time a machine of the TB persuasion. During a drunken programming session i squeezed a line out of that funky silver box. the following morning i applied the melody of her vocals to the rhythm of the line and voila! DJ History is made.

Did you know the original track?

Yes i did, it was a repeat offender played at Gypsy Bogdan's and my night at APT in NYC.

The remix is of the 40 Thieves version of an old Hot Chocolate track... Have you ever stolen anything (what?) and what is your favourite chocolate bar?

Have i ever stolen anything? What kinda interview is this!? Chocolate....Meiji makes the best chocolate. Not just because I'm sitting in Osaka with one in my hand either. It's the 100th anniversary of the Yamonote line in Tokyo this year and they've painted the subway cars to look like big blocks of chocolate on wheels. It's wonderful.

What's one thing you wished you had done this year but haven't managed too?

Finish an LP
.

And one thing you wish you could do next year but probably won't?

Grow up ; )

What would you say is the weirdest thing that has happened to you this year?

I didn't grow up… go figure.

This is called the Furtive 50. Furtive means to do something with stealth or in secret... What is the most furtive thing you have ever done?

“Have i ever stolen anything?”; “What is the most furtive thing I've ever done?” Who gave you these questions, my mom?

Sade has a new album coming out soon, I love Sade... do you?

Of course I do.

If you do, what is your favourite Sade track?

Love Is Stronger Then Pride. Hey, do you remember the house mix? the one on white from the mid 90s? They said it was Kenny Larkin and Stacey Pullen but I never got to the bottom of it. Any ideas?

Is 100 Bpm too slow for House music?

HOUSE IS A FEELING not a fucking bpm!
