Back in the old days, Ashley Beedle was the man behind the counter at Black Market Records. Since then, he’s been Black Science Orchestra, a Ballistic Brother, one-third of X-Press 2 and all of the Jamayka Boys. He’s also a fine DJ, veering from tough house to reggae 7s and post-punk delights. Since he’s relaunching his label this month, Out Hear, we thought we’d get him in to do a mix. Here it is

Filthy Luka October 2008

Filthy Luka, known to his mum as Luke Howard, has been a stalwart DJ on London’s gay scene for nearly 20 years, making his name at South London’s perennial favourite Queer Nation, before a name-change and slight shift north to Vauxhall and a reisdency at Horse Meat Disco. Chris Duckenfield September 2008

Chris Duckenfield originally made his name as part of rave duo Asterix & Space, before eschewing Vic's Vapour rub to go back to his Chicago house and Detroit techno roots. As part of Swag, he is responsible for some of the best and most enduring house records to come out of the UK. These days he plays all over the UK and Europe with sets that go from straight-up house to Balearic mania.

Allez Allez August 2008

Allez-Allez are Sam Willis and Steve Nolan.They promote Kompakt’s London parties at Plastic People, where they have played with Michael Mayer, Justus Kohncke and Thomas Fehlmann. They have also hosted and played alongside the likes of LCD’s James Murphy, Optimo and Four Tet. Their blog/podcast series (www.allez- allez.co.uk) features mixes from Allez-Allez and friends. They also party and dance.

DJ Sunshine July 2008

DJ Sunshine is the Norwegian woman behind the long-running Sunshine Sound System. She originally discovered the beauty of The Rave while on holiday in Spain and resolved to become closer to its epicentre by moving to London, where she eventually presented shows on Rude FM as well as DJing in clubs like the Blue Note. She also hosted her own show on Norway’s national NRK P3 for three years.

Mark E June 2008

Mark E shot to prominence with his wonderful edit-cum-remix of Womack & Womack’s Baby I’m Scared Of You. Since then the Birmingham-born DJ has produced a series of clever edits and original productions for Jiscomusic, Running Back, Golf Channel with more forthcoming on Sonar Kollektiv. As a DJ he has performed his unique dub-disco/techno style all over Europe.

Sal Principato

Sal Principato May 2008

You may never have heard of Sal Principato, but as lead singer in the influential Liquid Liquid you certainly know his work. Their classic track Cavern formed the basis for White Lines, a fact that led to the eventual demise of both Liquid Liquid and Sugarhill. He was later in industrial band Fist Of Facts. Sal is also a scenester, artist and consummate DJ. Here's the evidence.

Cedric Woo, January 2008

Raised on a strict diet of psych rock and reggae, Cedric travelled the lands expanding his mind and record collection. He is part of the Beauty & The Beat and Voices collectives eho host regular parties around London. Cedric also hosts a show every other Sunday on www.deepfrequency.com every other Sunday from 8pm - 10pm. He is a psychedelic soldier.

Mister Harrison, January 2008

One of our January competition winners, Mister Harrison's musical career goes back to the early 90s in Oxford, trying to convert the dreamy dons Tribal UK records when they really wanted happy house. Since then he's played in London, toured the Antipodes armed only with vinyl and snake repellent and these days digs for old Brazilian soul and funk from his dusty Sao Paolo garret.

Lord Muck, January 2008

Lord Muck is a soulboy at heart and a Yorkshireman by birth. After discovering Brass Construction's Movin' as a 13-year old his Genesis records never sounded the same again. He is firstly a collector of great music (from dub to Bulgarian women's choirs) but has occasionally been known to leave the parlour and DJ in public. He is currently attempting to breed a talking whippet.

Ronny & Renzo April 2008

Ronny and Renzo, named in deference to two influential giants of the Belgian club scene, are from Antwerp. Mysterious to the last, one is a club owner, the other a DJ. Their early productions came out on Humanity in the '90s before they went into hiding. Nowadays, through their vaunted label King Kung Foo, they make mind-bogglingly slow and intense music for leftfield dancefloors.
