Formed as a cross-Atlantic enterprise by Michael Zilkha (New York) and Michel Esteban (Paris), for a brief period in the early 1980s, ZE was the hippest record label on the planet. Coining the perfectly weighted phrase Mutant Disco (the name of their first compilation album), they unleashed a variety of crazy leftfield delights from James White & The Blacks’ squawking jazz, the Latin pop sensibilities of Kid Creole & The Coconuts to the studio excursions of Bob Blank and his Aural Exciters. Although the label did not last – Zilkha, the heir to the Mothercare fortune, went on to found Zilkha Energy Company and use his money more wisely (though with considerably less panache).
