Z Records

After running Republic Records, as an offshoot of Rough Trade, where he worked, Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, set up Z Records after he left RT. They’ve now been releasing music for 20 years, much of it via the numerous guises of Dave himself (Raven Maize, Sunburst Band, Akabu etc) and consistently good, with a mean line in excellent cover versions of disco and early house classics, such as Sessomatto’s ‘Movin’ On’ (originally by Carolyn Harding), as well as the occasional unexpected foray into the charts (Jakatta’s ‘American Dream’ or Joey Negro’s ‘Make A Move On Me’). They’ve also established a brilliant reputation for high quality specialist compilations, such as the recent Back Street Funk or The Soul Of Disco.
