Rough Trade

This legendary London label began as a record store in Notting Hill in 1976 and ended up as part of the Universal conglomerate (they have subsequently gone indie again). It was responsible for some amazing and innovative releases in its early years including Cabaret Voltaire, The Raincoats, The Pop Group, Young Marble Giants and The Fall, as well as helping to launch labels like Mute. At its height it was releasing chart music by bands like the Smiths before losing its way creatively. Since they relaunched, they have released albums by Belle & Sebastian, Babyshambles, The Strokes, as well as Mercury Award-winning Antony & The Johnsons.
