One of the original cult German labels, set up by Heiko Schäfer and Ata in 1993. The Frankfurt-based label was instigated as a housier offshoot of parent label, the more techno-oriented Klang Elektronik. There’s a certain timeless quality to what they do, a tad over-intellectual at times, for sure, but they’ve built longstanding relationships with several of their key artists, from Ricardo Villalobos and Losoul to Isolée. They’ve also made the occasional foray into licensing tracks from other territories, often well-chosen, like ‘I Feel Space’ by Lindstrøm or ‘Lovelee Dae’ by Blaze (the 2020 Vision of this tune remains one of our favourite ever vocal house records). The fact they’ve maintained a certain sound and style, as well as quality, over nearly twenty years is evidence that Playhouse is one of the best ever European house labels.
