Yet again, more bass music that has as much to do with the off-kilter experimentalism of the likes of This Heat, Throbbing Gristle and 23 Skidoo as it does the sound of London’s haunted walkways and bypasses. In fact, the direction they’ve taken is more akin to the subsequent manoeuvres executed by Spring Heel Jack after they emerged via the drum and bass scene. Mordant Music’s first came to the attention of many with the release of 2006’s Dead Air, but they’ve built an enviable reputation for releasing occasionally disturbing, and always interesting music (Sam Shackleton has also recorded for the label). You could do worse than begin with their compilation Picking O’er The Bones.
