Founded by German polymath Michael Reinboth in 1994, Compost was part of the German wave that also saw the rise of Rainer Trüby, Jazzanova and Kruder & Dorfmeister, German-speaking artists who approached dance music from a more jazz-influenced perspective (Reinboth is the Gilles Peterson of Germany). His label established itself with a series of eclectic compilations like Glücklich and the Future Sounds of Jazz series and has gone on to release many artist albums from Minus 8 to Robert Owens, as well as continuing to release 12-inch singles, and, on its subsidiary, Compost Black Label, some excellent house music.
