Charly

Pop promoter Jean-Luc Young, who moved the business to the UK in the 1970s, originally set up Charly Records in France. Over the past thirty years, it has developed into one of the premier reissue labels in the world, alongside Rhino and Ace. Mainly specialising in ’50s and ’60s music, though by no means confined to it, they have acquired a number of labels over the years such as John Richbourg’s classic southern soul catalogue Sound Stage 7. Among the goodies in their catalogue include the classic first Prince album (recorded as a teenager under the name 94 East and containing the Loft classic ‘If You Feel Like Dancing’), Curtis Mayfield, Nina Simone and John Coltrane.
