Hi,

A friend who has a Sci Fi blog is writing a post about the "To the Moon' box set pictured below.

It's a record box set covering the space missions.

Anyway, he asked me to think of some records that sampled recordings from the Space programs and all I could think of was The Orb.

Anybody else think of others? They have to be samples of actual audio from the Space programs, Russian, US or whoever?

BTW his blog is worth checking, especially his posts on Roger Dean

http://www.sci-fi-o-rama.com/category/artist/roger-dean/

Thanks,
C

Beautiful.

Count,
I'm a big fan of eno and especially his Apollo lp, but I don't remember there being any sample on there from the missions. However, I'm often wrong tho' or so my wife keeps telling me!

Btw, just finished the eno biography- well worth reading.

Cheers,

samples Ed White's spacewalk during the Gemini program. Made more poignant as he died in the Apollo 1 fire.

Mike Oldfield's "the songs of distant earth" contains samples from Apollo 8

and the Jean Michel Jarre "Rendez-Vous Houston" series include a track, 'Ron's Piece' which was supposed to have a sax part played in space by Ron McNair who died on the Challenger explosion just days before the concert... IIRC there are some little samples here and there from shuttle missions on some of the recordings.

paddee - eagle 5 might be of interest - very moody, atmospheric detroit style techno on a great early 90's double pack. not on youtube unfortunately, but if your friend is interested i'm happy to send a link.

Always been amazed this hasn't been sampled

http://www.amazon.com/Symphonies-Planets-NASA-Voyager-Recordings/dp/B000...

customer review
"Possibly one of NASA's most avant-garde projects ever, SYMPHONIES OF THE PLANETS is a five-CD set that is now out of print. Put simply, it consists of recordings made by Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 as they passed by the various planets and moons of our solar system. Although sound as we perceive it cannot travel in the vacuum of space, each planet and moon emits its own electromagnetic "signature" that can be picked up by the right instruments, and those emanations can be converted into sound and recorded onto compact discs for your listening enjoyment."

very cosmic.

this is fun, too - the ultimate gold disc, that was sent to space in 1977, containing sounds of life on earth, for aliens' listening pleasure. they even included a pic of a stylus set up etc. Smile

going slightly off topic - i remember seeing a great documentary about former astronauts in the late 80's. one of them, james irwin, was so freaked out by the whole thing he spent the rest of his life and his entire fortune looking for noah's ark in eastern turkey. must be pretty mental to stand on the moon and look back at earth.

Yeah, I vaguely remember hearing that it had quite a negative effect on a lot of astronaut's mental health, something to do with the insignificance of life in such a grand and cosmic context, which makes sense, but I'm not really sure if there's much basis to the claim

i would imagine that it could make a person ponder the big questions in life a bit more than they might, perhaps otherwise, have done. and tbf some of them seemed perfectly normal - but still very aware of what an amazing experience they'd had, and, how incredibly lucky they were.

Terrific article , beautiful photo scans.

Have you considered doing an article on the Russian N1 rocket? Be a great counterpoint to this -really looked like something from science fiction as well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N1_(rocket)

The story of the N1 tends to be overshadowed by the inveitable glory showered on the Apollo program (and the top secret nature of its development by the Russians)

Who knows what would've happened if they'd got off the ground too -

This is the best documentary I've seen about the moon landing. Way above anything else that's been made with some great interviews with the Apollo astronauts.

The two guys who made it got access to NASA footage that had not been seen in 30 years which is just stunning.

I'm always amazed about how humble the Apollo astronauts come across in stark contrast to all the talentless fuckwits that dominate popular culture.
