Was playing in Bournemouth yesterday - a slightly odd one, deejaying during the daytime in a bar / restaurant next to the Pier, overlooking the beach. It was the first time I'd ever deejayed in Bournemouth, and the only other times I've actually been there were back in the 80's when I was doing the South Coast run for Serious Records, which is something that connects directly to Ian (he was the person who introduced me to Mahesh, who ran Serious - Ian did the same thing as I was doing, but up North).
Anyhow, there was a guy setting up some equipment who was part of the crew who were on after me (he was a percussionist). He came over to me and commented on how much he liked what I was playing, then, right out of the blue, said 'do you know Ian Dewhirst?'. He was buzzing when I said I did, and also because I knew The Warehouse in Leeds, where this guy was a regular during Ian's tenure. He told me Ian had been a major influence on him and that he'd got into deejaying himself as a result. He didn't think Ian would know him by name - he subsequently deejayed as Tommy Mix (the Tommy came from Tommy Boy Records). He told me The Warehouse went downhill after Ian left (to work at EMI I think). I mentioned this thread to him, of course. I thought it was a real coincidence that someone who remembers Ian from The Warehouse should pop up, in all places, on a somewhat surreal afternoon in not so sunny Bournemouth ![]()

Phew. Thank f*ck I have someone who can help me out here LOL. Pete was @ the Mecca more than me so is a font of spectacular knowledge, particularly on the music at the time and the Mecca scene in particular - check out his "Spirit Of The Mecca" CD on Goldmine for a great snapshot of a night @ the Mecca. I refer to it all the time. None of us were slouches! We were f*ckin' BANG on it! Better than most IMO. The PERFECT thing about DJH is that we can get all of this shit down accurately 'cos we're all still alive and interested in preserving it all for posterity. I'm sure Pete will agree that the Mecca was the best club in the world in the early to mid 70's. No hyperbole. It really was. Now, if we can only get Colin on here............. Ian D ![]() |
