Better late than never! Madonna is 'sued after not paying for samples' in her hit Vogue… 22 years after the song's release

It has been 22 years since Madonna’s hit Vogue swept the charts and reached the number one spot.

And now a record company is reportedly trying to sue the singer for copyright infringement.

VMG Salsoul has filed a lawsuit against the 53-year-old megastar, claiming she used samples from Salsoul Orchestra's 1977 dance song Chicago Bus Stop (Ooh, I Love It).

According to TMZ, the company believes Madonna sampled horns and strings from the track – and never paid to do so.

VMG Salsoul has even explained why it has taken so long to file the offending lawsuit.

The record company claims that the samples are not immediately obvious.

They allegedly have only been detected recently due to new technology which is able to isolate and identify sounds.

VMG Salsoul is demanding unspecified damages in the copyright infringement lawsuit.

Not sure the extent to which anyone originally involved with Salsoul is involved with this. The catalogue was acquired by Verse Music Group in 2010.

"Verse Music Group LLC ("Verse" or the "Company") was established as an acquisition platform to purchase music-related intellectual property rights and other assets. The Company seeks to acquire thematically similar music "catalogues" consisting of music publishing rights, master copyrights, writer royalty streams and other related assets."

They have West End Records, too. Suspect they are more lawsuits to come.

Just realized that the media have missed a potentially interesting part of the story here. The CEO of VMG, Curt Frasca, was assistant engineer for the recording of Vogue:

Engineer [Assistant] – Curt Frasca
Engineer [Mix] – Goh Hotoda
Mixed By – Shep Pettibone

And the editor Tony Shimkin is listed as one of VMG's writers: http://www.versemusicgroup.com/writers

Most of the third-hand news articles don't mention that Shep Pettibone had also mixed the Salsoul Orchestra track.

Poor Madonna. Also getting sued by the French far right for beaming a swastika onto an image of Marine le Pen's face.
