A few of us are going to be playing at a roller disco soon, late 70s and early 80s disco, soul, funk and boogie. What tracks would you recommend? Probably gonna play slightly lower tempo stuff (funky sensation for example)... Bit of Leroy Burgess... Any roller disco classics that should definitely go in the bag?

Not that I'm suggesting you put it on and then pretend to mix...

Since you don´t get that many chances to play an actual skate rink these days you got to play this one.

Shift "Roller rink funk" is another that should be included.

Here's a mix I did on this topic. Don't forget disco rap as it was also played at these events and suites the vibe very well.

1. Syreeta – Move It, Do It [1981]
2. T-Ski Valley – Never Let Go (Rap & Breaks) [1982]
3. Spyder D – Smerphies Dance [1982]
4. Les Femmes – Yes, You Thrill Me [1984]
5. Fonda Rae – Over Like a Fat Rat [1982]
6. Just Four – Jam to Remember (Disco Mix & Breaks)[1982]
7. Rockmaster Scott & The Dynamic Three – Request Line [1984]
8. Videeo – Closet Freak (Special Mix) [1982]
9. The Whispers – Keep on Lovin’ Me [1983]
10. Convertion – Let’s Do It [1980]
11. Casper – Casper’s Groovy Ghost Show [1980]
12. Super Wolf – Super-Wolf Can Do It [1980]
13. Capt. Crunch & The Funky Bunch – The Gigolo Groove (Party Version) [1981]
14. Bon Rock & Cotton Candy – Junior Wants to Play [1982]
15. Little Toni Marsh – Video Burnout [1983]
16. Planet Patrol – Rock At Your Own Risk (Instrumental) [1982]

Having witnessed it with my own eyes (from the side or the rink) - you could do a lot worse than include any of the tracks on this mix -

If you need a tracklist - let me know and I'll post

love that Danny Krivit interview re roller discos. In any situation I love roller discos classics or records I think would be aces as you spin around pretending you are hand jive but really you are desparately trying to cling onto (a) the side (b) your mate in a non-sexual way (c) your mate in a sexual way (d) ladies bits. My imagined faves are all about this steady rolling groove with no sudden jumps just smoothness(having never donned a pair of skates in a disco):

Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up
Patrice Rushen - Number One (love love love it)
Clyde Alexander - Got to have your love
Vaugh Mason - Bounce Rock Skate Roll - classic for good reason ( there was a good RIPP edit of this with "If I Could Read Your Mind - S Wonder on the flip)
Lowrell - Mellow Mellow Right On
Steely Dan - Black Cow or for the Kids - Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz - Deja Vu which samples the Dan to smooth effect
LV - Throw Your Hands Up - New Jack Swing
SWV - Right Here
Michael Jackson - Human Nature - seriously roller discos are for the ladies, let's get them on the floor and not just a load of disco anoraks looking like fat Dr. Watsons picking up the scent a beat behind the party people
Truby Trio - Galicio (a bit of broken strings bizness?)
Pschemagik edit of Joyce's Aldeia de ogum - who'd of thunk that adding a breakbeat to a classic would work.

I see that FK is on the mooch round here - add some faves Francois! Smile

If we all listened to DHP we'd be wearing clothes we had grown ourselves, lighting fires by banging rocks and talking about COMMUNITY several times. Tongue whilst falling out over hedgerow conservation - " you holly bush lattice work fucks!" - probably
