What are the best solutions out there?
I have been looking at the Boss (Roland) Micro BR, which seems really simple and easy to use. http://www.roland.co.uk/products/productdetails.aspx?p=818
I am am keen to drive up quality over getting the cheapest option.
Thanks.

I'd recommend the Zooms if it's for some kind of field recording. this is a Sound On Sound review from 2009 so there's probably newer models.

i read a few of your other posts, i don't like you. i don't care if you never buy another record on z.

from what i could suss it's the last stop before it gets into daft money for recording. The line-in reviews as being decent and not noisy like some others plus the built-in mics are ok for mobile recording / found-sound
super easy to use even in the dark with no fuss dial for recording level or auto/limiter.
[bit less impressed so far with roland binaural mics - wonderful stereo image but quality not a patch on the unit's condenser mics]
Tascam SSR1 - rackmountable flash recorder, 16-bit, this is the bollocks, record and go
Its not portable though, great if you have a rackmountable setup tho
Tascam IIRC do handheld ones too!!!!

depends on the setup really, ive had my unit 5 years and i do everything with it, record mixes, rip vinyls, bang in nails, bring down the pub to impress the girls etc
