I've had the urge to by a new turntable recently, I love my current deck but I got the idea of getting a new one in my head and ended out buying one on eBay.
So I ended out buying a Luxman PD264, not a top of the range turntable I know but on a few hi-fi forums I did find several people saying they have had and enjoyed the turntable, also it was in my price range at around £200 and in perfect condition and looks lovely.
It came fitted with a Nagaoka MP11.
My amp is a Nad 3020i
So I set in up and play a tune, I notice the bass isn't as strong as my previous set up and that high end is far to high, very tinny even with the treble turned down. All in all its not sounding great.
Being a little disappointed a phone a friend for advice who subjected I might be better of buying a new phono-stage rather than using the one thats built into the Nad amp, as that might not be strong enough to handle the signal from the cart.
So rightly or wrongly I head out and buy what I believe is a fairly good Phono-stage a Cambridge Audio Azur 640p, £100 gone I wasn't planing on spending
Get in home, set the turntable up going through the new pre-amp and all sounds much the same, the bass is ok but not great but the high end is far to tinny. its weird the rest of the sound sits quite nice in the mix and separation is good I feel but the highs are ruining enjoyment.
I have a feeling changing to a different cart might be the answer, but as I have only owned DJ carts before and not more traditional hifi style carts I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before I spend cash I really haven't got and I read the Nagaoka MP11 is a decent budget cart.
I have wondered if the turntable took a knock in transit and maybe something has come loose (a wire of something) making the sound weaker but it all looks fine.
I'm going to contact the seller asking for advice but wondered if you chaps had any.
