Although as an Arsenal supporter I am obliged to hate Spurs. But I actually wanted Bayern to win on Saturday. Seeing Chavski win was stomach-churning and demonstrates everything that is wrong with football today. Spend a billion dollars and pik up a trophy. Tottenham's suffering was of little consolation. Every cloud, and all that brought little pleasure (apart from when I saw my Spurs-supporting colleagues that is).

What also irks me is the fact that the FA agreed to UEFA's ridiculous rule that allows a maximum of 4 teams per country. Spurs lost out so that the runners-up in Cyprus can play in the champions league, or the like. Another example of corrupt Uefa's anti-English stance. Total tosh.

Given that I've just forked out £2K on season tickets I think I've got every right to moan. I'm just as willing to moan about my own club as I am others, as objectively as I can. I think that moaning, along with shouting, pointing and swearing, are integral parts of the experience. Particularly shouting and pointing. Football is traditionally an opportunity to vent at the end of the working week, after all.

Smug? I don't think we've got much to be smug about at the moment.

Self-righteous? Well, I s'pose we can take some consolation that we're not Spurs. Will that do?

Last Saturday is further proof that everyone and everything connected to the Premier League is corrupt. It's all about money and nothing else. I can't even take any consolation from cheering on Bayern, because they're as fucking evil as Chelski, though seeing a bunch of German footballers on the floor crying after a penalty shootout was fucking great.

How can any of you support any of these teams in the Premier League? Seriously, I thought you were into underground clubs? Supporting anyone in the EPL is like going to a Tiesto gig or buying David Guetta records. Londoners should be supporting no-hopers like Barnet or Leyton Orient.

And HOW can you moan about Cyprus, they had a team in the quarter finals, further than Manchester United did. You should be supporting Apoel Nicosia, not Spurs or Arsenal, they're both massive cunts as are all the people who follow them. Failing that, Grimsby Town, a proper underground club who only play on vinyl.

Or Montpellier, fuck there's a team that deserve support. They just won Ligue 1 in France for the first time in their history with the 13th highest player budget in the division. And beating PSG who've got loads of cash. A true triumph of sporting excellence over money.

You know as well as I Bill, that most of us don't have a choice who we support. It's in the blood, and the whole concept of choosing a club, which was the original premise of this thread, is totally alien.

I totally agree that money has ruined top flight football, and it is a completely different experience on all levels to when I first started going to see the Arsenal in the seventies. But I said all this earlier in the thread.

I still love my club and always will, but that doesn't mean I love everything about it, or football per se.

Agreed. Also agree with Bill about local clubs etc. I did used to go and watch Barnet a bit as well when I was 10 or 11 but it was too late by then. Once you've got a club, you've got a club.

There is a bit of a difference between underground clubs (music) and small clubs (football). You don't primarily go to underground clubs because they're less well known and obscure and untainted by capitalist greed, but because you like the music and think it's better, right...? Admittedly it's much nicer to go to a club (in either sense) and not feel like you're being ripped off and simply a cog in the greasy machine of profit-making...

I always feel tempted to get my leftist hat on talking about football and say that if you object to money and profit ruining something that was non-commercialised and about community, etc, you could be talking about unrestrained capitalism generally. What's happened to football is just symptomatic of that. Watch what happens to London over the next 30/40 years unless the housing market gets sorted and made affordable. It'll turn into a sterile rich gleaming unaffordable soulless town, with everyone else not made of money on the outside...

Er, time to stop ranting. One quick last thing: I don't know what this says about football (if anything) but I've just read a piece in a French paper about Ukrainian prostitutes gearing up for the Euros, getting ready for a seriously busy period, brushing up on their football knowledge so they can chat with clients.

Got to love Montpellier though.

thanks all for the extended replies. i love the sociology of sports so your thoughts are really cool. the smaller clubs are particularly interesting so will keep an eye out for a plucky little team from some small village to follow. want it to be an informed decision and to feel right though.

which brings me to the spurs. geez, what a time to choose them! last sunday's final day and the last few minutes of the champions final were what i came to epl looking for. sadly, it all ended in tears for this new yiddo, but i am now resolute in my decision. now just have to pray my favorite three players stick around next year. modric it seems is a goner. not my favorite but extremely talented and a huge blow. bale i have no idea. logic says he goes but he seems to like being a spur. and finally, adebayor who really seems to have taken to the club, but again, hard to see him liking europa cup next year.

ugh, pins and needles for the next few months, but this is what it's all about, no?

well opened the new season with my new jersey at the local pub. on the way there i was accosted by group of arsenal fans on the street screaming "garbage spurs!" at me. so despite our bumpy transfer season, lack of strikers and opening loss i am resolute in my choice of club.

COYS! stand up if you hate arsenal! stand up if you hate arsenal! Hat

I don't really watch EPL anymore out of disgust with it all, bu I heard the Newcastle - Chelsea game was cracker on Saturday.

However, Grimsby won 4-2 and opened up a gap of three points over second. We fucking rule. For the time being.

If you have to follow a Prem side, why not just go and watch Youth games. It'll be a lot cheaper and you'll see some really good football without sucking satan's penis by spending 100 quid in the ground
