I know there has been, and you lot will tell me - but I despise trance. I always thought of it as music for people who dont like music, which is snobbish i know - but it really is wank. All my mates used to bum lord oakenfold where as I couldnt stand it, and I got told to listen to some Deadmau5 tonight and had a little go - lordy, what a load of cronk.

However, I appreciate I listen to a small section of trance, and if I think hard enough there used to be some good stuff on Bonsai (I think), and I used to maybe know a little bit of that purist trance stuff they had on at raves - but i think its going to take something mighty to convince me its not music for cunts. So please, take it away...

From 1990 ... still sounds good ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFel_JPa9Ts

http://www.discogs.com/Revelation-Synth-It-First-Power/master/116069

Nice quote from label-owner Frankie Bones from Discogs:

"This was the jump-off release for my label Atmosphere Records. And a perfect record which for 1989 was nothing short of amazing. This is what the label wanted. My vision was music that was Atmospheric. The word trance somehow is how I remember it. Because it was not house, it was not techno. It kind of had this electro-ish, hypnotic trancey feeling to the vibes in those grooves. Anyway Mundo Muzique was a musical genius if you ask me.I am glad I can look back 16 years and think "Wow, this still is some amazing stuff."

like everything chosen so far especially 'first power', 'lifetime mission' and 'emotional rehabilitation'.

my top ten - some would argue a lot of it is euro techno, ebm or brooklin beat, but it's all trance to me.

1. syntech 'discontented' (hotsound / xyz)
http://www.discogs.com/Syntech-By-Trial-And-Error/release/121117

the rest of the album is fairly typical space-synth stuff, but 'discontented' pretty much wrote the blueprint.

2. dance 2 trance 'we came in peace - 1991 remix' (suck me plasma)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnR_A_zQ3bU

3. mundo muzique 'andromeda' (easy street / r&s)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIf72E4NLpI

4. code 6 'c.o.d.e.s.' (new groove)
http://www.discogs.com/Code-6-Second-Chapter/release/4644

best record beltram ever did imo

5. die schwarze zone 'wir schicken dich in's all' (dance pool)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Of3tZ2lM07Y

before he turned into mr vain torsten fenslau made some killer records

6. cj bolland 'mantra' (r&s)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkvYlYcXYww

7. age of love 'age of love - jam and spoon mix' (react)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT9pH9C7Oew

8. umo detic 'fahrenheit' (new zone)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scgkvsb39eI

tons of classics on this label and affiliated labels like suck me plasma, but i chose this one cos it's the one that kicked it off

9. teste 'the wipe - 5am mix' (probe)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_6z6JE89hg

10. der dritte raum 'hale bopp' (virgin schallplatten)

I would loosely lump these under the early 90s 'trance' umbrella - about all that remains from that era in my collection..

sven vath - la esperanza
union jack - red herring/2 full moons and a trout and some of the other early stuff off platipus/noom/eye q
the snap essential mix of 1994
cj bolland - camargue
quench - dreams crunched up mix
cafe del mar - kid paul mix

...but then things seemed to change around 95/96 -that scene seemed to fracture into what the goa/crustie/Israeli contingent did [ie a totally alternative subculture] or the more mainstream German/Dutch sound, which completely bastardised the music and turned it into the monster it is today. By the time the whole gatecrasher phenomenon arrived, I had long since left the station and got back into house.

Sometimes it's hard to know what is considered trance or just techno. Agree with Dave on Age Of Love. This mix used to create havoc:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqnR3yXOFmY

Also...... Gravitational Arc Of Ten by Vapourspace ..... mental record!

I'll probably think of some more later on ..... a misspent youth at The Orbit in Morley has fractured many of my memories from this period.

I used to love a bit of trance a very long time ago, but a lot of it hasn't aged well.

A few that spring to mind:

DJ Hell - My Definition of House Music (Resistance D Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI96AGZzmTg

Golden Girls - Kinetic (Cubic 22 Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPuLMZZ-OvU

Transform - Transformation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ3pkY_11kg

LSG - Fragile
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ4NQcF43Fg

Jam & Spoon - Stella
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZpkhpfecwg

Jo Bogaert - water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjy7PD4PvdA
(can't find the original mix of this)

Castle Trancelott - Indoctrinate

Just had a good listen to all the links posted. Seems that anything considered good comes from a time when the boundaries between trance / techno / house were still not overly defined. Maybe its when Trance went off on its own it went cronk - the period of the nineties into the two thousands stunk.

Some of thr stuff here is good, but I wouldnt have called it trance - more like dance music with trancey elements. Then again, thats what trance is now. All very confusing.

It's when Oakenfold started championing/releasing it that it went really cack

Don't like the genre much, but I can bear with some of the progressive stuff. I think the sounds that they use makes the music sound lifeless. There are occasionally some decent melodies tho (probably just sampled).

John Johnson - Hong Kong

James Holden - Solstice

Must confess I find some of the more standard "nu-disco" releases seem like pitched down trance

Well, try it in reverse - check out a handful of Trance release on Juno, imagine them at 110-120 BPM and tell me you don't think you've heard similar stuff going on in nu-disco. Or maybe I'm just highlighting the farcical nature of melodic dance music here

(i.e. I can't think of anyone now that you've put me on the spot)

That's alright, I can wait for you to think of few Wink

As I've mentioned before, I reckon it's closer to slowed down early Prog House.

Especially that Blackbelt's stuff.

I must admit i find alot of the new disco italo sounding stuff reminds me of trance in many ways. But then, i am a sucker for a big dirty bassline groove.

Hmm, maybe prog house is a closer cousin. But definitely having just flicked through some Juno trance I think my point stands with at some nu-dsico releases.

Definitely "Age Of Love". Superb.

Some of the LSG stuff.

Air Liquide, though they're more acidy techno than "trance", however, we called it trance then.
