I know there has been, and you lot will tell me - but I despise trance. I always thought of it as music for people who dont like music, which is snobbish i know - but it really is wank. All my mates used to bum lord oakenfold where as I couldnt stand it, and I got told to listen to some Deadmau5 tonight and had a little go - lordy, what a load of cronk.

However, I appreciate I listen to a small section of trance, and if I think hard enough there used to be some good stuff on Bonsai (I think), and I used to maybe know a little bit of that purist trance stuff they had on at raves - but i think its going to take something mighty to convince me its not music for cunts. So please, take it away...

i seem to recall some of the early Harthouse and Eye Q stuff was OK, though i was battered most of the time back then ..... and i havent listened to any of in years, may not stand up to the test of time!

like everything chosen so far especially 'first power', 'lifetime mission' and 'emotional rehabilitation'.

my top ten - some would argue a lot of it is euro techno, ebm or brooklin beat, but it's all trance to me.

I would loosely lump these under the early 90s 'trance' umbrella - about all that remains from that era in my collection..

sven vath - la esperanza
union jack - red herring/2 full moons and a trout and some of the other early stuff off platipus/noom/eye q
the snap essential mix of 1994
cj bolland - camargue
quench - dreams crunched up mix
cafe del mar - kid paul mix

...but then things seemed to change around 95/96 -that scene seemed to fracture into what the goa/crustie/Israeli contingent did [ie a totally alternative subculture] or the more mainstream German/Dutch sound, which completely bastardised the music and turned it into the monster it is today. By the time the whole gatecrasher phenomenon arrived, I had long since left the station and got back into house.

Just had a good listen to all the links posted. Seems that anything considered good comes from a time when the boundaries between trance / techno / house were still not overly defined. Maybe its when Trance went off on its own it went cronk - the period of the nineties into the two thousands stunk.

Some of thr stuff here is good, but I wouldnt have called it trance - more like dance music with trancey elements. Then again, thats what trance is now. All very confusing.

Don't like the genre much, but I can bear with some of the progressive stuff. I think the sounds that they use makes the music sound lifeless. There are occasionally some decent melodies tho (probably just sampled).

Well, try it in reverse - check out a handful of Trance release on Juno, imagine them at 110-120 BPM and tell me you don't think you've heard similar stuff going on in nu-disco. Or maybe I'm just highlighting the farcical nature of melodic dance music here

I must admit i find alot of the new disco italo sounding stuff reminds me of trance in many ways. But then, i am a sucker for a big dirty bassline groove.

Air Liquide, though they're more acidy techno than "trance", however, we called it trance then.
