Just been reading some of the old interviews I did on a trip to Belgium a while ago and wished I'd gone to Boccaccio at its peak.

Wondering if there's anybody here actually went?

idiotically not. i spent two weeks in belgium in the summer of '88 on a record blagging pilgrimage but never went as i don't drive and it seemed hard to get there. i so wish i'd made the effort!

there's a documentary about the history of belgian dance music coming soon that features quite a bit about boccaccio. i got a sneak preview as i'm a talking head in it and am kicking myself even more for not going now.

There's some interviews online in dutch from Renaat (r & s label), Mo (glimmers), first timers, celebrity chefs, etc. Dj's were making more from selling cassettetapes (10£ in 1990 money) than their actual fee, barstaff were selling dubs on the parking lot for even more. Sundaynight was the wildest with hairdressers, mobsters, Grace Jones, overpaid chavs, prostitutes, random scum. The early days 87-88 had next to no drugs but with heavy media coverage coke and shitty prototrance came in and the place shut down.

i went once, around 1990. push (who went on to start muzik mag with ben turner) and i went when we were doing a feature on belgian techno for melody maker. we also went to la rocca and a few other places. tbh though i really don't remember much about any of them.

Does this also cover popcorn, as well?

I just had a look at the clip. Bit disappointed really. Looks like it's Boccaccio onwards judging by the short clip. Hope it mentions Eddy de Clercq at least.

I remember Steve Williams came on here a few years ago and I'm sure he said that by '89 it was basically the same house sound as the UK clubs. Before that the Belgian / New Beat sound was very interesting.

There's a few old mixes here if people don't already have any:

yes, it covers popcorn in some depth and delves even further into belgium's night life history before that. the clip on the site does the film less than zero justice. eddy de clercq is featured quite prominently.

Ah ace stuff. The trailer's really cleverly done but a bit misrepresentative, I guess. I'm assuming Fat Ronny also features in that case. When is it out, Keith?

Back then this meant 'gay man with good taste in music who didn't have to work on mondays'

The very interesting period is the short overlap of leftfield new wave and acid house. In '90 things were getting pretty tribal, same deal at Roxy Amsterdam with Eddy De Clercq & Dimitri Kneppers giving the people what they wanted. Speaking of EDC, he's got a mad blog documenting vinyl music history on the African continent http://soulsafari.wordpress.com

Oct 20, must be at the Ghent film festival

Yeah just spoke to a friend Geert, who tells me he's involved with it, so I'm promised a sneak preview. Hat

I went a few times on sundays around '89. I lived in Antwerp so I could only get there with some friends that had a car. On saturdays I mostly went to La Rocca near Antwerp (Lier) at that time. The music was very similar (wave, new beat, early acid, house, techno ... some dj's like Eric B played at both clubs). Boccaccio was a little wilder (and a lot louder !). I remember it being so packed and loud you had to go outside to get some air ... Then Café d'Anvers opened ('89). Music there was totally different: disco, NY garage house, italo (called happy house in Antwerp - DJ Koenie of USA Import was well known for playing this). Later on ('91,'92,... ?) we went to Ghent: Mo&Benoulli (now the Glimmers) at the Zodiac Cafée and a lot of parties in warehouses, etc. around the city (most crazy place to party I remember was "de oude vismijn" - a sort of underground cellar where you had to descend a ladder through a hole in the ground ...).
I'm very interested in that documentary, jd !

I think we need to work out a way of showing it here in the UK. Let me put some feelers out about it. Maybe a showing in Glasgow, Manchester and London would work.

Is that the same Koenie that runs Wally's Groove World in Antwerp?

great mix from the later, not so cool, period. similar to what was being played in uk clubs at the time, but i really like the way it was mixed. very clean, quick and precise - which, from my experience, was the european style back then. been busting this all week.

nice one dave.

suburban knight, beltram, digital boy, "rock to the beat", mental cube, quadrophonia, deee-lite, mix masters, betty boo (!?!), nomad, monie love, deee-lite, eon, 33 1/3 queen, version of "hardcore uproar". and loads of others who's names escape me at the mo'.

suppose the odd section is when the dj went for a long piss and his mate put a few of his girlfriend's favourites on?

any clever sod able to edit out 59:40 to 76:00 and re-post it. Smile

reminds me of the 808 state mix show on sunset radio in manchester and the eastern bloc "storm troopers chart".

top spotting there, ivan. that's pretty much it + a load of r&s /rave signal / orlando voorn type stuff. btw, a few of those 808 tapes found their way down here.

djs saying ''808 state, playing anything at anytime'' in broad manc accents, whilst mixing index with euro techno, is one of the things i remember. i loved em. . . felt like the hacienda had magically appeared on my hi-fi.

Be keen to see this documentary.

Sure the cornerhouse would be the best place to show it in Manchester Bill.

And the monumental Technarchy by Cybersonik. This film should be shown in Detroit for sure, Reese's 'Sound/Rock to the Beat' massive influences/sampled heavily on the Belgium sound then Belgium fed back into early (and best) UR.

Hehe, Renaat used to be a hairdresser before he
started the label. Apparently he would sometimes
cut the hair of various business contacts as they
were having meetings. I got this gossip from a
very reliable source.

obviously went/partied there a thousand times...from the industrial pre-newbeat era to early house and detroit inception until the hard-techno and eurobeat....even played there once (near its end), it was one of my first gigs. it's the biggest influence on me as dj/producing and the craziest out-there party moments ever, with a closing on monday evening it's not unlikely. the closest thing to boccaccio life is for me berghain/panoramabar, not musically tho.

if you're looking for a South London venue then here is great, in Loughborough Junction

Speak to Lee / Rob / Mikey and you can negotiate a decent price.
