Since Cosmic Jane has brought up the subject of a People's Choice tune, I was wondering what your personal, lesser known, songs from Philly were?

Here's a few...

Robert Upchurch - The Devil Made Me Do It
Whispers - Bingo
Jacksons - Living Together
Modulations - I Can't Fight Your Love

;D
Archie Bell and the Drells - "Glad you could make it". Nice boogie number.
A couple of lesser known, pucka boogie/disco tunes on PIR….

My Music – Bunny Sigler (killa track – “If I had a band..)

You're The Girl of My Dreams - O'Jays

Time Will Take Care of Everything – Lou Rawls

Tighten Up At The Disco - Archie Bell & The Drells

Searchin' – Stylistics

JJ

The Ebonys - You're The Reason Why

Bit of a 'slow jam' (and not sure how unknown it is) but I like it. I'm sure there's a track or two that sample the beginning, (speeded up a lot) but I cannot remember what they are. Does anyone here?

Oh and 'Stop and Think It Over' by Anthony White - Nice!

Again not too sure how unknown this is
My Music – Bunny Sigler (killa track – “If I had a band..)

JJ,

Was this track recently covered by Context (theirs was called "If I Had a Band")? Bill put me on to it after he played it on the radio recently. The lyrics at the start are:

"If I had a band, I'd travel all over the land, playing my music..."

Here's a soundclip of the Context track, in case you haven't heard it:

http://www.juno.co.uk/IP/IF142282-01.htm

It sounds like it must be a cover but there are no credits on the record itself.

I don't know the Bunny Sigler, so I can't say, but here are a few of my own....

Gloria Spencer - I Got It (Jay Walking) Brilliant gospel from early 70s. Produced by Bobby Martin.

Tapestry - It's Not The World That's Messed Up (It's The People In It) (Capitol) Norman Harris on the faders, excellent early conscious disco.

Taj Mahal - Why.. And We Repeat Why.. And We Repeat... (CBS)
Taken from the album Music Keeps Me Together, this is an instrumental version of Why Did You Have To Desert Me, which was on the Mo Roots LP (both albums recorded at Sigma, I think). It's much better than the vocal version, the production much punchier.

BB King - To Know Him Is To Love Him (Probe) From the album of the same name, cover of the Stevie classic, who also guests on keyboards, backing band provided by none other than MFSB...

BB King - Philadelphia (ABC) From the Friends album, one of two recorded with MFSB, extended MFSB-style instrumental with BB giving it major geeetar over the top of Earl Young's drums. Yeehaw.

Dione Warwick & Detroit Spinners - Then Came You (Atlantic) Produced by Thom Bell, minor hit in this country, and a brilliant soul song.

Talk Of The Town - Bumpin Boogie (TSOP) Before McFadden & Whitehead were called thus, they were known as Talk of the Town. This is ace funky disco.
Bill - need to hear that Talk Of The Town track. Hey but your cheating :) I thought you meant tunes on the PIR label.

Smac - the Context is just the Bunny Sigler rejigged with a not too heavy drum underneath. Get the original. It's truckloads better If the short soundbite of Context is anything to go by. That starts with the JB-like horns, but the original builds up to that, with Sigler introducing the players... "get me a funky bass player..... a conga conga man.....gimme some drums....etc, before the horns and all the backing singers come in. Top hole old boy, as people from Grimsby would say.

JJ

Unfortunately, the rest of that LP (My Music) is average.

Coincidentally, I picked up the first Instant Funk LP yesterday (Get Down With The Philly Jump). Has some nice tracks on.......... as well as "It Ain't Reggae....", other stand-outs for me are "I Know Where You're Coming From" and "Funky Africa".

Also check:

BILLY PAUL - We All Got A Mission
THE EBONYS - Nation Time

Are there 12's of that Bunny Sigler track out there?
I saw 7's and Lps only on Gemm

X CJ

Hello CJ

The only way of getting the track "My Music" is from the LP "My Music". None of Bunny's Philly outings were originally released on 12" ("Keep Smilin'" appeared on a reissued 12" a few years back), and I'm pretty sure that of the 7"s released, My Music wasn't one of them but not 100% sure.

The LP won't cost a mint, but it can prove tricky to find. It was issued in the UK as well as the USA, so you may well find it relatively cheap.

Incidentally, all the instrumentation on the "My Music" LP was provided by Instant Funk, which probably explains why it sounds so good.

Another interesting fact - Instant Funk were the band that played on Dexter Wansel's "Life on Mars". Amazing but true! ;D

On the reissure 12" doesn't it have an instrumental on the flip? All my Philly gear is reissure (thankyou Beatin' Rhythm!) and very good quality presses actually. If so, then that is definitely the best option as you get the longer version and that track really is a groove. Although even as I'm typing this I'm not sure whether it does have the instrumental. Aaagh my brain is meltinggggggggg.............................
And, if like me, you're partial to a bit of old funky reggae, then you must check Johnnie Clarke's version of Clean Up The Ghetto, called "Peace In The Ghetto". That bass line sounds fantastic in a reggae setting.

JJ

This is a good thing!:D

I'm just very anti this whole bogus re-edit culture thing.
I'm also very not into extremely long (and almost always pointless) extended versions of tracks that work perfectly well in their shortened versions.
"Maybe it's because I'm a Northerner..."

I bet that Sebastian Tellier record would have actually sounded good, had it come out on a 7" (certainly would've had more longevity.)

Talking of Miss Carn/Carne...did anyone go to the Philly Allstars show a little while back featuring the aforementioned singer with Billy Paul and Dexter Wansell? Billy was awesome, Jean less so (imo) and Dexter did his thing, but the show overall was a little lacking for me, mainly because every tune was done in about 4 minutes, so there was no extended soloing and interplay between the musicians. What did others think?...
