View Full Version : The Monks

'I Can Do Anything You LIke' has just been bootlegged, on Punk Disco Beat, vol 2. It appears that the miscreants behind this (and the timeless 'Nice Legs, Shame About The Face') are none other than...Hudson-Ford!

Screw electroclash, it's time for a Novelty record revival!

Tim

Punk Disco Beat, what? Never heard of that. Don't remember the tune, either, though the Hudson Ford connection was never a secret. They played on Top Of The Pops dressed as monks but it was clearly Hudson Ford. Reactionary bastards, anyway, they did that Part of the Union record.

Tim H

Not a fan then, Bill? I thought 'Heart of the Union' is the Strawbs - is that them as well? The bootleg appears to be a follow-up to this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/128008
.
Worth a listen.

Tim

and The Swarbs before they were Hudson Ford weren't they?

what's the reactionary record you're talking about Bill?

ladyboygrimsby
02-05-2004, 05:37 PM
Yeah, it was the Strawbs that recorded it, but Hudson Ford wrote it. Actually they didn't write it. They wrote an anti-union message over the top of Union Maid, a traditional US folk song. The dickheads.

I still like them, mind.

That Punk Disco Beat is just a bootie then? I can guess what most of the OGs are except the last one which is a cut up of Maximum Joy and Glaxo Babies, I suppose.
Cosmic Afro? ???

Crazy club scene in Italy in late 70s/early 80s. Main DJs Baldelli and Mozart. Interesting story. Ask Jo, I think he's just interviewed Baldelli. I'm going over there this year to do some research.

Tim H
02-06-2004, 10:02 AM
Yes, I saw a passing reference in Jo's Italo article in 'Keep On', which sparked my interest. Big scene, do you think? Did it last for long?

At one point it waas massive. People came from all over Italy, Austria, Switzerland to see them play. They were so obsessed with Baldelli and Mozart that when they started playing around the country (after the Rimini clubs got closed down because of drug taking) they refused to go in the clubs until they actually saw the DJs themselves going in. You'd have 3,000 kids stood outside waiting!

There's still a Cosmic scene now, but it's turned into a kind of bizarre New Age/World music thing.

The only vinyls I had were related to the Afro scene ( a collection named "Electro Funky Afro Sound" and other stuff).
Don't worry, some stuff from De Luca's book will be posted...

ciao,
Fabio

how many bands called the Monks are there? There's this one, the one that The Fall covered on Extricate ('Black Monk Theme") who were some kind of US servicemen in Germany doing proto-punk I think.... anymore monk-ish groups out there? The Friars, the Habits?....
