My DJ oppo, Theo Noble, played a splendid tune on Saturday by Izit called Stories so I was wondering what other goodies from the period there are. I'm not interested in jazz noodle, I want good dancefloor records. I know the obvious ones, but not the not, er, obvious ones (I think I've made myself perfectly clear there)... And they don't have to be on the Acid Jazz label, merely considered of the genre, as it were.

Hi Bill... Izit Stories is a more or less exact cover of an early 70s Chakacha's tune... became a Ballyeric anthem in 1989... Oakenfold's mix is sublime... no, really! They did another good 'un called Make Way For The Originals - Coldcut did a good mix of it in 1990 as I recall. And now they run Hospital records!

Pharoah Saunders 'You've Got To Have Freedom' was a massive tune on the jazz dance/acid jazz scene in the late 80s so its no surprise that there were a couple of killers that sampled it: Dharma B 'Everything Is Going To The Beat' was on Acid Jazz in 1991 and was played by Humphries at the Shoom Wembley warehouse El Tel mentioned on the Faith board... the other one is 'Look Up (See What's Coming Down)' by REP... AKA Danny Harrison of 187 Lockdown, M-Factor and so many other identities I couldn't even begin to remember them all... Gary Dennis is trying to flog one at the moment for £75... yes that's right, that's not a typo... seventy five of your english queen's poundings. Good tune though, I remember it as being quite big in 1989 but I played it recently and a few people who I thought would know it asked me what it was... which is always nice ;D its in a similar vein to Soho - Hot Music, which I'm sure you'll know, but was another big jazz-not-jazz tune of its day.

My favourite tune from the Dingwalls era, which to be snobbish about it is the true 'acid jazz' period, when they were playing loads of experimental stuff and jamming it all together, not later when loads of crap funk bands in silly hats blanded it out and gave it all a bad name... anyway where was I? oh yes, my favourite tune of that era... Jean Luc Ponty - In The Fast Lane. Can't remember the name of the album its on, but its got a bige cover (of course) on US CBS 1988... killer fusion meets electro... kind of proto house, played at Shoom as well as by Gilles I'm reliably informed and still sounds good today.

Tell me, am I going mad (it was late when I heard it), but does it sample Johnny Reggae by the Piglet. Not the whole tune, but the spoken word bit and maybe a riff.

I've got the Hi-Tides EP by REP (it contains comedy dance record That's All Folks! in the It's Nice To Have Money vein), but I didn't know there was a previous one.

I know about the Jean Luc though I didn't realise it was well known. I thought it was one of those, "ooh this sounds like a techno record" curios that people occasionally play each other (cf. New Musik).
the rap on the remixes of Izit - "boogie in your butt come on and get up" -comes from E Man Boogie by Jimmy Caster I think... is Johnny reggae that Jonathon King record: ''e's a real tasty geezer" yes Jonathon and he's also 14...

In The Fast Lane is just killer... at Dingwalls in 1989 it'd be the peak of the night, er I mean afternoon, when they turned the lights off and banged on the strobe! Sampled on a house tune byy Tom Salta called New Generation in 1990 but I'm sure you didn't need me to tell you that!

other big Gilles and Patrick anthems from that era for me

Alive: Skin Do le le
Airto - Samba de Flora
Billy Hawkes - Oh Baby I Believe I'm Losing You
Willis Jackson - Nothin' But Thutherin' (whatever thutherin' is)
James Brown - People Get Up & Drive Your Funky Soul
Dom Um Romao - Braun Blek Blu
Mystic Moods- Cosmic Sea
Doug Carne - Higher Ground
Milton Wright - Keep It Up

plus:
Ultra Nate - Its Over Now
808 State - Pacific State
Mantronix - King Of the Beats
Public Enemy - Fight The Power (Jazz Mix)
James Taylor Quartet - Starsky & Hutch (oh come on we all loved this at the time!)

now thats acid jazz!

Jazz not Jazz eps
Little confused here, Bill - do you mean (old) records that were big on the acid jazz scene in general, or the modern tunes which sprung out of the genre (JTQ, Pamiroquai, etc)? Frank has gone down route and I kinda figured you were angling for the other.

No, actually I was more after tunes made at the time by the likes of the Acid Jazz stable or Dorado or... anyone of those labels. I know and have many of the rare groove-y type tunes, but am slightly bereft in the original productions department.

REP - "Look Up" is a great record.......... I seem to remember there being some discussion about it on NJ's board when Crazy Beat stuck it on their list for £75 as Mr Tope says.

Another fave of mine was ACE OF CLUBS - "Tribal Knight" which appeared on the first Talkin Loud compilation LP. Bit of a Jazz/Dance/Boogie thang.....

The Subterraneans - "Taurus Woman" was another good tune that came out on an Acid Jazz 12" - downtempo and funky as hell.

SOHO - Hot Music. What a record!!

Also Ashley & Jackson "Solid Gold" AKA Steve Cobby out of Fila Brazilia. I could be mistaken though...I know it's someone who then was something else
???
Haven't heard this in years mind.
I like the new JTQ single, but isn't that just plain old disco? For that matter isn't Solid Gold as well?

Another one of those 'jazz not jazz' records that sampled Johnny Hammond's 'Tell Me What To Do' (which was alos big on that scene, as was 'Starborn' from 'Gambler's Life', which Soul Brother have recently re-issued).

;D

Didn't Ross give you copies of all that Dorado stuff Bill? There are a few nice bits and pieces. Like that one where the kids sing - title/artist escape me at the mo (tell ya later).

Mystic Moods - yeah, like that. I've got it on one of those quadrophonic LPs from the 70s, where some bloke tells you what you are listening to before it all starts. Freaky.

Mad fact of the day (if it's true!) _ Afro-Dizzi-Act was made by Barry Blue - he of 70s pop hit "Dancing On A Saturday Night". Shirley not.

Best acid jazz tune: Make sure you're with a friend, put on any Coltrane album and drop some red devils. Wa hay!

JJ

Yes! Mother Of The Future... should of remembered that one... that's proper acid jazz that is! Slewfoot off that album is massive too...

three early ones on the label (when they still had the smiley face with glasses... being speccy myself I always wanted one of those t-shirts!)
Bukky Leo Quintet - Happy Faces/Rejoice In Consciousness
Byron Morris Unit - Kitty Bey
APB/Before You Know It - A Man Called Adam (feat. Paul Daley... whatever happened to him eh?)

the one on Dorado with the children a la 'Fabulous' by Jahiem is The Plan by Outside, beautiful tune, as is their '9/8 Steps' see also Dominican Girdles by Ursula Rucker NB:Ollie who owned Doarado runs Universal's new media stuff now in the UK

One artist I remember seeing at Dingwalls and the Wag who I really enjoyed was Philip Bent... dubby On U Sound style b-lines with spaced out flute on top... whatever happened to him?

A couple of UK soul tunes that kind of fitted in with the acid jazz vibe at the time:
McKoy - Family
Courtney Buchanon - R U Conscious

all that's on the upside... on the downstroke:
love beads, flared cords and floppy po' boy hats... :P

One artist I remember seeing at Dingwalls and the Wag who I really enjoyed was Philip Bent... dubby On U Sound style b-lines with spaced out flute on top... whatever happened to him?

He hit major recognition when he performed with the Jazz Warriors alongside Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers in the Camden Jazz Festival circa 86(?).

He moved away from his jazz roots, preferring to experiment with programming his beats and rougher dance edged sounds. The label that signed him apparently threw a Courtney Pine sized lump of cash at the project, which quite frankly, died on its arse. The sleeve to his debut album was a picture of Phil dressed head to toe in leather (a la Tom Jones) sporting his flute over one shoulder, wearing an oversized pair of Rayban Wayfarers. Not a good look.

And regarding all the Izit questions. The ex-guitarist is now one half of seminal d'n'b crew London Elektricity - so direct any questions you have that a'way.

A few Acid Jazz moments that I hold dear to my memory would be;

The Night Trains
Ulf Sandberg Quintet - Bolivia
Orphy Robinson on Blue Note
David Toop - Black Orchid
Courtney Pine - I've known rivers (a little late for AJ, I know, but what a belter)
The Butter Foundation on 8Ball
Black & Brown - a one off album on Irma
Cloud 9
Frederic Galliano - Frederic lies still
Early Raw Stylus
Repercussions
Greyboy
Karl Denson - particularly Blackened Red Snapper on a phenomenal track produced by Greyboy and featuring Andy Bey on vox, 'Bourgainvillea'

As well as the more obvious players of the day like The Sandals, Mother Earth etc.

Wasnt the acid jazz scene a bit of a joke? even giles Petersen disowned it after a while. I alwasy thought it was more about buying expensive tops out of the Duffer of saint George.
