Arthur Adams 'You Got The Floor' is written by Bernie Hamilton.
The same Bernie Hamilton that played Captain Dobie in Starsky & Hutch.

Chas n Dave were the session musicians on Labi Siffre's I Got The...that monster bassline is none other than Dave himself...

Anyone got any more?

McFadden & Whitehead, ("Ain't no stoppin' us now"
were originally members of Harold Melvin's the Blue Notes.

MFSB's "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" originally was supposed to have lyrics to go with its purpose as being the theme to the TV show - Soul Train.

Luther Vandross appeared on the children show SESAME STREET in 1968 as part of an ensemble of singers called "LISTEN MY BROTHER", who had performed a musical show at the Apollo Theatre in New York.
Luther sang the lead vocals to a song called "YOU'VE GOT TO LEARN SOMETHING". The song was written by Patrick Adams and was used on Sesame Street from time to time for over 20 years.

Bill Oddie is a dance music fan. So much so he hired the best session musicians to play on Goodies albums, hence Ride Your Pony, a top bit of Goodies-based funk.

Rinder & Lewis played on the original Shalamar single (Uptown Festival), which is more than Shalamar did.

Walter Gibbons played professional football for Cardiff City in 1971-72 season. He played left half.
Rinder & Lewis played on the original Shalamar single (Uptown Festival), which is more than Shalamar did.

On a topical note, given that the Ian Dewhirst interview has just been included:

When Simon Soussan suggested doing a Northern Soul medley, in the style of the Richie Family's hit 'The Best Disco In Town', Ian (who was also in L.A at the time) said he thought that a Northern medley would only have a limited appeal and put forward the idea for a Motown medley.

This was the origins of 'Uptown Festival', with the 'band' Shalamar, named after The Shalimars, who'd scored a big Northern hit with 'Stop And Take A Look At Yourself'.

Being a Motown medley, Soussan had a meeting with the company at their Hollywood office about the possibility of putting the track out, and it was as a result of this that Soussan came across, and stole, the ultra-rare Frank Wilson 45 'Do I Love You' (which now has a value in excess of £15,000).

As things turned out, Motown never signed 'Uptown Festival', but Don Cornelius did, for his Soul Train label, with the record subsequently becoming a huge hit.

Jeffery Daniel, one of the dancers from 'Soul Train' became part of the band, and would later, during appearances on British TV in 1982, introduce body popping to the UK.

;D ;D

I actually don't believe that Walter Gibbons played for Cardiff.

But Bill Oddie was a good footballer. A stocky little winger. My old man played in the same charity team as him in the early 70s, so I used to get dragged around to watch them every week. He always rushed off to go bird watching after the matches, not up the disco! Tenuous Sesame Street link too... Play School's Brian Cant was one of the full backs - and he was rubbish.... Even more tenuous DJ History link is that Ed Stewpot played in goal, and he was pretty good. And of course he was proper DJ who spoke, unlike you lot!

No...disco trivia though.

Love that Bobby Moore tune Greg. Recently discovered it myself. Very nice.

Eezy
JJ
More disco / football triv.

According to an old copy of "Black Music", Soul Makossa was originally recorded as a throw away b-side. The original a-side was recorded as a patriotic theme for a pan- African football tournament being hosted that year by Cameroon. Apparently he was "invited" to record this by whoever was in power at the time and although lacking enthusiasm for the project didn't feel it would be in his best interests to refuse...

Glenn & Chris' 'Diamond Lights' is surely the ultimate mirror-ball / football crossover tune?

No JJ is absolutely right. I can't remember the name but it definitely is. Certainly on the Penthouse Records issue (with foldout Pentouse Pet cover.... grrrrrr... Lets Make Love In Public Places is a medley with Let Me Be Your Fantasy on the A-side (thereby arsing it up considerably)

fans of the beautiful game may also like to check:

Mickey & The Soul Generation - Football
Sergio Mendes - Pele LP (but not the ones where the great man actually sings.. red card for that particular samba hate crime - stick to your Fifa meet n' greets please mate)
Jorge Ben - Ponta de Lanca Africano
(the lyrics for this go something along the lines of "I love it when you play and score goals on a saturday... go man go!" I'm paraphrasing of course
Crystal Palace 1990 FA Cup Squad - Glad All Over (Beloved Remix)
Purely in the interests of research (and not because I wanted to see Marilyn Chambers touching her pert nipples), I checked the record and there is a tune called At The Football Stadium on the same side as Let Me Be Your Fantasy. Gwen Guthire sang on that, you know.

PS The Beloved didn't really do a remix of Glad All Over did they?

some proper trivia to get back on track...

on Nile Rogers - Stay Out of the Light the remix is credited to Larry Levan and Judy Weinstein... that's because Larry fell asleep in the studio so the Def Mix lady had to do it for him.

didn't senile Pop Idol milionaire Pete Waterman produce Two Man Sound 'Que Tal America'?

Jolyon

Yep Waterman produced Que Tal...

Waterman also worked for Philly Records at one point I think...someone should interview him.

I had lunch with him once in the 90s when I worked for DMC... to his credit he was very garrrulous and spun a good yarn... said he started out at Philadelpia as a young shaver, then told me about how he was a tape op in the studio when Steely Dan were recording, and they were permanently nutted on a mixture of coke and acid... on the downside he was a bit "let me tell you son, I invented Northerm soul etc etc..."

Gil Scott Herons grandfather played for Celtic. T'is true.

Tis not, Kev. Twas his dad, fer sure. Gil Heron, the Black Arrow, did indeed play for Celtic. He also played for a couple of other Scottish teams and then he moved down here and played for someone equally implausible like Yeovil.

Maybe he played with Walter Gibbons at some stage?

Well, takes a Celtic fan to get Celtic trivia wrong. :-[

Walter Gibbons, a truly overated player in my book. Couldn't kick his own arse.

Back to the trivia....

Chaka Khan had a penchant for skinny white young boys and used to disappear into her hotel room for days while on tour with Rufus! ( with her prey )
She also used to go shoplifting for kicks!
Arthur Conley wrote " Sweet Soul Music " on his own but Otis and Sam Cooke 'persuaded' him to put their names on the writing credit too.
Harry Casey ( K.C. & the Sunshine Band) fired his entire crew in Wrexham because his microphone kept whistling during a soundcheck (He immediately re-hired them after being informed of the lack of sound crews available in North Wales that week!)

God, I used to have very graphic fantasies about Chaka Khan as a teenager. I can remember her on TOTP singing "Eye To Eye" c.1984 wearing fishnet tights...... oooh, she had the most marvellous thighs....... :o

The Wrexham Soul Festival, would you believe, in 1975. Apart from KC, Junior Walker and the All-Stars, The Foundations and Mac & Katie Kissoon were on the bill. It was an outdoor event held (getting back to the football theme) at the Racecourse Ground.

;D ;D ;D

Greg, I was going through some old magazines and came across a picture of you from 1982. It was an advert taken out to thank B&S readers for voting you '3rd Best DJ in the North'. I was going to paste it up but I haven't got any paste, but I'm sure it's one you'd remember. Bright white jacket, little black bow tie, white shoes..... Ring any bells? I now know why everyone keeps saying how young you look now..... You were defintely about 9 in 1982..!

Eezy
JJ

I won 2 tickets in a competition on the local radio station and took my friend Derek. I phoned him to tell him about this thread and I see he's left a message. Derek was building his own mobile disco when he was 11! We were at school together and both started working in the clubs when we were only 15. He still deejay's, more than thirty years on, and has also released his own stuff during recent years as Kayestone (with Sheffield DJ, Ricky Stone).

That photo of Danny sounds excellent, you must dig it out.

It was the same photo they used when I wrote a regular column for London fanzine Groove Weekly in 82 (some kind of baby-faced James Bond thing going on there!). It's almost as embarrasing as the following years Blues & Soul awards photo (up from third to first this time), by which point I had a full-on footballers perm!

Hey, those crazy 80's!
