...I'll also stick my neck out and add that REM's 'Everybody Hurts', while not being a 'soul' performance per se, is a truthful and emotional song which I think stands head and shoulders above many others. Even without a Bobby Bland or James Carr delivery, it's a song with feeling.

Even without a Bobby Bland or James Carr delivery, it's a song with feeling.

Yeah, it's a beautiful song. I also think that U2 tune written about blokey out of INXS (Stuck In A Something You Can't Get Out Of) is a great song in the same vein.

There's also another emotive song by Kevin Hewick called Haystack (it came out on a Factory cassette) which has the same effect, except it appears to be about taking heroin, so maybe that disqualifies it ???

young americans - david bowie
peg - steely dan
my head is my only house unless it rains - captain beefheart

'preciate the beefheart selction might look weird, but hear it & believe! on "clear spot".

;D

Agree that "What You Won't Do.." by Bobby C is really nice, but I think "Down For The 3rd Time" from the same album is even better - its already been listed I see. I wish it didn't fade in though. I bloody hate that. If I remember rightly, he followed it up with an album of complete shite. The Cat in the Hat or something like that.

The Cat in the Hat or something like that.

Knot sew...'Coming Down From Love' on same LP is h'excellent, though the fact that I can't remember any other tracks from said album may mean the rest of it is indeed soiled Y-fronts.
;D

Thanks Sean. I'll try to buy it back next time I see it!

Just been workin' the brain over...

Ned Doheny's 'Prone' used to get rinsed out much at P Towers. Apart from the obvious 'To Prove My Love', three other corkers are on there - 'It's The Devil In You', 'Guess Who's Looking For Love' and 'If You Only Knew'. All very West coast and subtle, with great arrangements.

Also a nod to the right honorable Tony Monson for a couple of his '80s power -plays, David Lasley's 'Saved By Love' and Kenny Loggins' 'Love Will Follow'.

Re: Bobby Caldwell, he also did a good 3rd album ('Carry On', I think) that carries on in the vein of the first. Two or three great tracks, including the title track and 'Words'. Not sure about anything after that though...

Not sure about anything after that though...

I'm sure BC made LPs way into the '90s, but probably just CDs on indie labels. I'm certain I had one from around 10 years ago and it wasn't really doing it for me. How the mighty fall - Lamont Dozier, one of the best songwriters in history, delivered one of the worst albums of all time, around that same period!

Smiley, lifted this from misicweb re Boz Scaggs

"He retired to raise two sons, one of those musicians who didn't need to do it if he didn't feel like it; came back with Some Change '94 (accent on his languid guitar playing), then Fade Into Light (a jamboree bag of new versions of best-known songs, available only in Japan), and Come On Home '97 on Virgin, back in the groove. Two-CD My Time '97 on Columbia compiled 33 tracks of suave-rock 1969--87. "

OK, I know it's not life changing or anything, but I'm still a tad confused as to why American Gypsy was mentioned in a 'Blue Eyed Soul' recommendation.

Unless of course the lead singer was wearing contact lenses and had a dose of the 'Jacksons'?
I guess 'blue eyed soul' is a fairly hackneyed term from the 70s/early 80s referring to soul records made by white folks,. not just pop records that sound soulful. But its a pretty damn grey area I'll grant you. Perhaps the boundaries are those set by the soul scenes of the times - so if the soul pirates of the 80s accepted the likes of Pop and say Yeah by The Limit then it was "Blue Eyed Soul", but say, Haircut 100 or A Certain Ratio weren't?

Well, its a theory innit?

I seem to remember there was a much less good natured debate on DHP a while back banging on about how it was a racist term ???

insofar as American Gypsy go, I always thought thery was crackers but as the only records of their's I have are on 7" and I've never seen a picture so apart from the general folk funk hippy vibe of the records I haven't got a leg to stand on as to their ethnic origins. Not that it really matters one way or another.

Mind you I mentioned Toto 'Georgy Porgy' as well and a lot of its soulful vibe comes from Cheryl Lynn on BVs. So its all bollocks really.

oh yeah - and while I guess everyone here's a fan of America's BES classic Tinman, has anyione heard the soul cover version? very, very good indeed...sadly the singer's name has just escaped me but its available now as a 7" on Kent.

one more: Kenny Loggins - This Is It

What do you need to know about american gypsy.

I have this biog (all in dutch). Just a few facts:

They guys are original from LA, Went to holland (maastricht, thought they were in the us army, not sure about this)

The first album was recorded with the famous dutch producer "hans van hemert". They have recorded 4 albums as American Gypsy and split in 1984.

Some members of the band have recorded later as "max n specs"(Lorenzo Mills) and "band of gold " (Steve Clisby , Omar Dupree )

Just a pic for the color:http://www.popinstituut.nl/isb/282_1981_a.jpg

More questions ???

nu shooz (canada??) was remixed by dutchmen "peter slaghuis" who also recorded as "hithouse" and died in 1991 after a car accident.

The limit is dutch, but the some of the background vox on "say yeah" = gwen guthrie.

Found some better ?pics of american gypsy:

http://k1ono-web.hp.infoseek.co.jp/a_ameyps75.jpg
http://www.tirelipimpon.com/images/vign120/vamerim.jpg

Here's a coincidence. There were actually two groups known as American Gypsy:

The one who recorded "10,000 Miles".

And a white US group who were sort of a cross between Chicago and Dr Hook (they were known simply as Gypsy in the US). This group later became The James Walsh Gypsy Band.

The John Edwards cover is apparantly from the 90s but sounds 70s... its available now
;D

Don't know whether its right or wrong but I was told Tin Man was on John Edwards' Careful Man Lp which was made in the 70s but didn't get a proper release until the 90s. Whatever...it's a top modern soul tune. Have you had a modern soul top 3 yet?
