I was intrigued to read a thread on Daniel Wang's recent DJing over here on the DHP... someone said he always played the same 30 records and listed a few including Kajagoogoo 'Hang On Now'. Now strange to admit I quite like the bassline in Too Shy and definitely like Ellis Beggs & Howard 'Big Bubbles' but was a bit sketchy on what happened in between. Curiosity piqued, one cheapo netsounds purchase later and I have a 12" with a quite nice instrumental 80s pop-boogie first half, but that goes into the blandest song known to man. I suppose at a push you could re-edit it into something playable, if you were so disposed, but you'd really have to want to. My question is this... is there a US or Eutopean remix of this otherwise fairly unremarkable number that transforms it into a work of hitherto unimagined genius? Or does Danny Wang just play some odd records? :-\

Still, my 12" came with a free poster of this remarkably coiffed combo, so I'm happy enough.

I don't know about Kajagoogoo (although you know that Americans have a much higher tolerance to Brit-nonsense from this period), but when he played at Faith last Christmas, he did hip me to a few really good disco records which I'd not previously known about. Even better, they were so obscure that, though they were hard to locate, were very cheap to buy once I found them.

They were:
Mellrose - Don't Want To Start Again
Methusalem - Robotism
Ray Martinez - Lady of the Night

I really like the Midnight Mix of Too Shy and play it out regularly. That bassline is strongly similar to Don't Look Any Further/Paid In Full don't you think?

As for Hang On - I think it's rubbish, but perhaps the spotter of this supposed Wang classic was looking at the wrong track because there's an instrumental track called Introduction on the same 12" which is quite good.

As for EBH, Big Bubbles is balearic class and Where Tomorrow Goes is OK in parts.

As for what happened in between....I think some serious amounts of brown powder by at least one of them....until they clearly discovered E around the time of Big Bubbles....

P.S. Too Shy is the only record I have that has a thankyou to Paul Gambicini on the sleeve (Limahl's boyfriend at the time I believe)!!

What again?! ;D
Too Shy Midnigfht Mix definitely works for me... although now you've given it the Parrish seal of approval you'll never get one for 50p again! yes the instrumentals are quite nice, but more for a chill out kind of thing

some 80s pop bollocks off the top of my head...
Vicious Pink - Ccan't You See (French Mix) (sounds great right now mixed with current electro)
Scarlet Fantastic - No Memories (twisted Weatherall classic)
Fleetwood Mac - Big Love (Arthur Baker Mix) (massive rave tune! Radio Rental!)
Fleetwood Mac - Family man (Arthur Baker Mix) (as played by Ashley at a Boys Own back in the day... ah happy days!)
Spandau Ballet - Chant Number One (Remix) (flip of Instinction 12")
INXS - Disappear (Morales Mix)
Bananarama - Cruel Summer (dub)
Fun Boy 3 - Our Lips Are Sealed (David Byrne Remix)
Fun Boy 3 - Faith Hope & Charity
ABC - The Look Of Love (US Dance Version)
ABC - Who Wants To Be A Zillionaire
The Quick - Zulu (instrumental)
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf (Night version)
Gary Numan - Cars (E Reg Version)
Clubhouse - Do It Again/Billie Jean (Instrumental)
Culture Club- I'll Tumble 4 Ya
Depeche Mode - Behind The Wheel (Shep Pettibone Mix)
Killing Joke - New Day (Dub)
Human League - League Unlimited Orchestra (whole LP)
Heaven 17 - Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry (Dance Version)
Heaven 17 - I'm Your Money (second half of 12")
Cabaret Voltaire - Yashar
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Rage Hard (12" version) (& Two Tribes was a massive record on the early Chicago house scene)
Soft Cell - Memoribilia (especially the version off the nonstop ecstatic dancing EP with Cindy Ecstacy rapping and Marc Almond doing Turn The Beat Around at the end!)

then like Zapp said, there's the Minniapolis connection - thank you Prince cos you sound so good to me!
Sheila E - Glamorous Life
Sheila E - A Love Bizarre
Prince - well, everything! But a shout out to the very long 12" mixes of Mountains and America

Basically everyone in the 80s had at least one half decent remix somewehre down the line.

well I could go on but I'd better digress and get on with some work!

the b-side of duran duran's is there something i should know is quite a nice instrumental. also i am rather partial to the second half of the day before you came, by blancmange - all sweeping synths and echoed horns
the best fgth imo is the alternatuve mix of welcome... it comes in a sleeve with a bowl of fruit on and has a three minute spoken word intro. a low life classic...

Heaven 17 - I'm Your Money (second half of 12")

I always figured this as an absolute shoe-in but I never heard anyone play it out In a Balearic stylee. mind you I remember dancing to it when it came out. Is that proto-Balearic ?
For my money the best Heaven 17 12'...,closely followed by "Let me Go".

There's also the BEF compilation that relaunched Tina Turner, "Music Of Quality & Distinction" which contains Gary Glitter's version of "Suspicious Minds" and the cassette album "Music For Stowaways" which is la lost
elctronic masterpiece. Like an update of the Human League "dignity
Of Labour" ep. Innovative, exciting electronica....

Finally, in similar vein, did anyone ever hear The men "Don't Depend On You" 12" played out ? That was Human League mark one in (electro)
disco disguise. Quite good, not great...

Anyone checked 'Hold It' by Tin Tin?
(Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy as he was later..)

Really nice FK inst mix on the B side...
Pop and Dance in heavenly marital bliss!
Finally, in similar vein, did anyone ever hear The men "Don't Depend On You" 12" played out ? That was Human League mark one in (electro)
disco disguise. Quite good, not great...

Only heard the version on a compilation LP picked up from a charity shop which I *think* was called "Music For Stowaways"... perhaps the same one, Deepo? Some top stuff on there, must dig it out now.

Great-but-annoying to hear you mention "Bryllyant" by Boytronic - been after this for years, had it on some compilation tape and a snippet on some dodgy New Beat mastermix 12" but it's not enough...!

It was a cassette only release that was made specifically for the Sony Stowaway, the precursor to the Walkman. I remember the tape had a yellow casing with black or red writing. There's some nice stuff on that, I seem to recall. Doesn't it have an instrumental version of the laughably fast Fascist Groove Thang?
