I always think of Casablanca of the most conspicuous example of ;late period disco's over-production and consumption. God, there were a lot of crap records that came out on that label.

However, there are lots of good ones, too. I'm thinking:
Donna Summer stuff
Alma Faye - Don't Fall In Love
Loose Change - Straight From The Heart
Margaret Singana - Why D'Ya Do It
Skatt Brothers - Walk The Night
Parliament - Up For The Down Stroke
Rare Gems Odyssey - What Is Funk
DC LaRue - Do You Want The Real Thing

There must be a good Village People record, too. Is there?

As the Brenda was, strictly speaking, on a subsidiary, should we include Chocolate City, Parachute, Douglas, Earmarc, yada-yada? If so, puts me down for The Players, Cameo, some 7th Wonder, Harvey Scales, Last Poets and assorted crapola (TJM, Lipps, Inc.,) also.

'Stop The Clock' by Bobbi Walker was a fave of mine and there's a Gloria summat-or-other who did a track called 'Get Down With The Get Down', which I used to really like also - t'was a little like Peter Brown's 'Dance With Me'.

Let's not forget Greg Perry, Gloria Scott, Randy Brown and Jeannie Reynolds. Big up the Hackney Massive.

KISS - "I Was Made For Loving You"
the drunken 3AM munter anthem : when you absolutely positively want to break every chair and table in a bar, accept no subsitute ;D
such a cool name for a record label too... great imagery... love the story about the gofers going from office to office on a friday afternoon taking the weekend's coke order from the staff.

Ah, yes, I overlooked Chocolate City. We have to have Cameo (and they also did another thing under an assumed name, Mantra, on Casablanca proper didn't they? It sounds like them to me).

And if we include subsidiaries, then TJM's Small Circle Of Friends would be in there, I guess (thanks for the tip on that one, JJ!)

What was on Parachute, Sean?

That Kiss record is pants. Even if Harvey played it. :)

They were on RCA for much of the world, Casablanca in the US etc. I always think of the tan RCA NZ / Aust label when I think of Village People

Yeah, Bill -
Mantra did sound rather too much like Cameo to have not been them(!) - rather like the LA Connection LP Cameo produced in '82, not to mention Charles Earland's 'The Only One'. Funny how anyone Cameo produced ended up sounding exactly like Cameo! The Players on Casablanca were actually Cameo, though - and there was quite a good single on C.C. by The Funkateers.

Parachute people included 7th Wonder, Vernon Burch, Lalomie Washburn and Sidney Barnes from Rotary Connection.

I currently work with Willi Morrison of THP Orchestra fame (okay, total obscurity) and he produced Skatt Borthers Walk The Night for Casablanca. When I told him it was a pretty rare and sought after record and asked if he had any copies at home he said, "no, but perhaps I should have hung on to the 50,000 copies that casablanca didn't sell!! :o

Jim Burgess mix of Kiss does it for me every time

what about Alex Constantides Romeo & Juliet, first segment on the b-side. quite like that.
Starpoint - I Really Love You... or something like that... great disco track
Has anyone mentioned Parliament yet?

WTF, Casablanca was a GREAT label!

anyone got Casablanca Dance Masters - Street Edition - great mini Lp with Tee Scott Edit of Brenda & the tabulations, Skatt Bros., Parliament - Flashlight... used to be a regular cut-out in Mi-Price in Croydon, only bought it cos of the charts in the first i-D house article in 1986!

Hey Sean - what was the Seventh Wonder track that Sugarhill turned into Eight Wonder and ended up being cut up on Adventures on the wheels Of Steel? Really want that...

what about Alex Constantides Romeo & Juliet, first segment on the b-side. quite like that.

WTF, Casablanca was a GREAT label!

If Alec Constanides ever made one good record, I'll eat my trousers.

Casablanca was NOT a great label. You're thinking of the cream, but look at the rest of it. It was dire. When I lived in the US you couldn't move for dollar bin Casablanca records. They put out some great records largely by accident. In the same way that an infinite number of monkeys would eventually type the entire works of Shakespeare (that's Robbie not Will).

Easy Frank

I'm sure the edit of Brenda & The Tabulations was a Danny Krivit edit.... ? I've got a copy at home and I seem to remember he had a lot of work put his way by Polygram (parent company) around that time. Something to do with his friendship with a bloke called Tim Rogers if I'm not mistaken. It's one of the reasons why his edit of "Funky Drummer" appeared on "In The Jungle Groove" by James Brown.

Casablanca was patchy, but had some great moments:

Harvey Scales - Dancing Room Only
7th Wonder - Do It With Your Body
Cher - Take Me Home
Parliament - most of their stuff

Question being, IS there a label that put out consistently good product?

Island Record from its inception until early 80s when Chris Blackwell's involvement seemed to wane (and then he got bought out). Lots of great ska in the first period, then loads of mad rock groups added to the roster for the second period (Spooky Tooth, Doctor Strangely Strange But Oddly Rather Normal, McDonald & Giles etc), then folky stuff in the early 70s (John Martyn, Nick Drake), blue-eyed soul (Stevie Winwood, Jess Roden), the great Roxy Music, then loads of second wave reggae, including Sir Bob Marley, and then the Steven Stanley period when he was Island house engineer: Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones (post-Moulton) and then the go-go and hi-life stuff (King Sunny Ade, Trouble Funk)

And U2, who singlehandedly kept the label afloat when they lost the plot.

Some people have no taste!!! ;D

The Winwood tune of choice for me is Time Is Running Out (the 12-inch). The A-side is really good, but the B-side, basically a dub of the A called Penultimate Zone is properly nuts. It sounds liker a deep house record made in 1977. Not an easy one to turn up for some reason, but worth it.

I think Kranny Divit had a relative who worked for Polygram NY - may have even been Krivit, Sr. This is probably how he got his foot in the (Poly) dor.

Casablanca wasn't one of my favourite labels at all - they were just too tacky and rather inconsistent. Parliament, Parlet and Cameo were my Casa' fortes, as well as the bits I mentioned earlier.

But, hey - as a label, they were about as 'D.I.S.C.O.' as you could get, in every respect. Now, everyone do a line for Bogart and Holmes...

Just noticed this thread. Agree that they did release alot of shite, but going back to Casablanca and its subsids, I really like ..

Music, Harmony & Rhythm - Brooklyn Dreams (Millenium Records 1977, I think - not at home at the mo. It has to be the 12" though, as the LP version doesn't contain the nice long instrumental break)

We Are Climbing Higher - Seventh Wonder (Parachute Recs around 78 - a blinding little funky soul thing). There are also great segments in Seventh Wonder's "Do It With Your Body". It's been sampled in a couple of house records (one by that Cockolotto bloke) but I reckon it's one for your re-edit guy Bill. Lovely bass line..

Rigor Mortis - Cameo (Chocolate City 76?) - Not as good a record as, say, Sound Table, but a wicked little funky one that doesn't get played too often)

The Fruit Song - Jeannie Reynolds (Casablanca 75(?) - top, top soul tune with pucka lyrics. This is the woman who later killed her kids and herself I think)

And on that pleasant note...!
Eezy
JJ

There was a nice re-edited version of "Do It With Your Body" that appeared on "Disco Elements Vol 2" back in 1992 - Zaki D & Rob Mello's disco project on Azuli. Took all the best elements and made it super-sweet.

Everything I've heard by them, apart from Music, Harmony & Rhythm, has been pretty rubbish. I don't even like Streetman very much (at the risk of sounding like a heretic). I bought an album and that was Le Grand Panatalons, too.

Great site.

Aside from the various Casablanca items mentioned here,
I have to add a weird one that I reallly liike:

Dennis Parker promo 12" with extended remixes of
Like An Eagle (dark, druggy, sleazy, great)

NY By NIght...(corny, Broadway show-like, historic interest, funny , great.)
