VJ's is good, despite their erratic pricing!

Honest Jon's is still a great shop.

Greenwich is always great for bargains.

Selectadisc is cheap and handy, despite all the staff talk as though they have a stick permanently wedged up their arse.

Can't beat the record fairs for bargains and plenty of classics.

I'm still wondering why I bought it, since I've not played it out. I can't remember what the other one was, but it was an import (from the US, though, not Venus).

I know VJs sometimes sell some 12s as Jap imports at around £17-18. Seems a bit excessive as they are only re-presses.

Someone bought me a Jap 12" of K&TG's "Summer Madness from there for £18. Apparently it has the rare "Magic Groove Mix" on, which was never released. Not that it's much different to (or better than) the original. Just glad I didn't have to shell out for it!

They're expensive on euro imports too; £7-£9.

However, kings of the skank IMO are Koobla, they also have an incredibly snotty attitude if you don't buy ALL of the records that you listened to....
Vinyl Junkies - Excellent selection, avoid the Japanese fella when paying; he makes the prices up off the top of his head

if he tries that again, say this phrase in japanese to him:

"kono yaroh, namen na yo!"

which means: don't fuck with me, you bugger! ;D

in tokyo, my favourite shops are -

jaro (in shibuya)
this place will make an entry in the all-time-top-five-smallest-record-shops-in-the- world list: it's less than 9.9 sq meters. it's a jazz-only shop with about 8000 records and some cds crammed into shelves and boxes. worth a look. some scandinavian-looking backpackers were taking pics there the other day (without buying anything >:( ). the collection is great with both vintage originals and new, unopened vinyls.

el sur records (in shibuya)
perhaps the best world music record shop in japan, with very helpful assistants. they let you hear most of their stuff before buying. their reggae section needs some improvement but the latin, arab/north african, and indian collection is superb.

spiral records (in omotesando)
a joint that has a cool, carefully chosen selection of old and new sounds from various genres. the amount of cds and vinyls aren't that much; it's a "killer rather than filler" kinda shop. all cds can be heard before purchasing. bought a copy of fat freddy's drop's "hope"/"bluey" 10" single there.

i live at the end of the known earth, so i gotta say www.juno.co.uk
clear & useful soundbites, good prices and five working days delivery to here (the end of the known earth) as well as totally secure on-line ordering.
and not a single f**k up in three years of using them oncde every ten to fourteen days either.
top marks.
Good call on Juno, young fellow. I often buy stuff from there, despite living nowhere near the end of the Earth. If I've not got time to go to town I often get stuff there and it's nearly always arrives the following day.

I don't think anything can beat either King Bee in Chorlton or B-Side The C-Side in Herne Bay for top browsing pleasure though.
I get a good bit from Juno but recently a lot of the records have slight scratches/pops and few have arrived with a good bit of warping going on. Anybody else noticed this or am I being paranaoid again. Bet it's the shady post man really eh?...............

I don't think it's just Juno - I think a LOT of retailers are guilty of this....

....which means it's actually the pressing plants I presume.....???

Had far too many shitty pressings (UK and USA) in the last 1-2 years for it to be a mere coincidence. Worst of the lot was probably the pink vinyl of "Are You Ready For Love" when it first surfaced in the usual Soho shops. When I played the Ashley Beedle mix, you can't hear the song for the hiss in the background - utter shit pressing!!

It's just a real pain, especially if you don't always have the time to listen to the record before you buy it (although as most of the equipment in the shops is so manky, I couldn't rely on getting an accurate replication of what I would get at home!). You get home, all excited, put the wax on, and.......... HISSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

I can imagine it being even more annoying when buying online!!

Quality does seem to be slipping.

Moan, moan, moan.....
Moan, moan, moan.....

That's far too little moaning, Andrew, not nearly enough for me. Moan some more, dammit. I like moaning. More moaning, for f**k's sake!

::)
i haven't had any issues with the quality of the vinyl from juno (yet).
i could do without the a***hole courier THROWING the packages at my front door at 6am when they do arrive here (the end of the known world), but the records themselves don't seem to mind... not as much as the missus does anyway.
i agree that that pink vinyl pressing of daddy ash's elton remix was a heinous hate-crime though... i thought ashley had f**ked it up deliberately and dropped a beat every 16 bars, but it's actuallly skipping like some demented eight-year-old child. serves me right for playing it i suppose. it's not exactly the Triumphant Moment Of House Music. (i do love that sleeve though!)
As you say Smiley, the Keith Haring sleeve is worth the £7 alone!

.....even if it it's arguably the most debated record of the year (albeit over 20 years old). Bit like Marmite - you love it, or you hate it.

.... or you don't mind it.....

....or you like the original but find the remix too noodley....

...or you prefer "Candle In The Wind" or "Nikita".....

...or you couldn't give a flying f**k either way.

well, if sir harvey says it's bobbins then that's that i reckon. can't argue with the man, that first late night sessions he did for the misery of sound is still a hi-rotate classic around casa del smiley.
but:
are any of the other sir elt remixes any good though?
did he do any other tracks during that same session?
and did it actually go to #1 in the UK or not? i saw a chart with it in the top spot, but i think it might have been a midweek???
