View Full Version : Jose Padilla - Cafe Del Mar tape

I bought this tape off Jose for 1000 pesetas down the Café del Mar on my first visit to Ibiza in the early nineties. Like many I wanted a recording of some of the strange and beautiful music played there - though it now largely reminds me of coming down in a grotty San Antonio hotel room after a night in Ku - sweating and feeling unusual :)
Loads of Padilla classics on here anyway - Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Dorothy Ashby, Andreas Vollenweider, Eric Serra, Fleetwood Mac etc.

You have to scroll down the page to download - it's a bit of a pain.

At Café Del Mar, Jose DJed not to people sprawled out watching the view, but to the sunset. “That came naturally. You’ve got this big motherfucking thing in front of you, King Ra. I paced my set around the sunset time. It was great to experience different music and play around the colours. If it was grey Id play one way, if it was very bright Id play more uplifting. Id play according to the mood.”
Thanks, downloading Side A now.

They're re-recorded from a 60 min tape hence both parts being approx 30 mins long. Dorothy Ashby cut off in her prime ;)

yep, there's a couple of standard Jose train-wrecks in there as well. I like to think he's influenced my DJing style more than anyone else...:)

Sadly no. I guess if he couldn’t stretch to C90s he wasn’t gonna do track lists either :)
Where’s Sandy when we need him?

Thanks for these posts - first time I've seen any discussion on the web on the original cafe del mar music rather than the CDs. Something a little more magical about the rare and live mixes. I have tapes 1, 2, 27 and 4. I don't think 27 or 4 have been mentioned in any of these threads and I'm going to look for somewhere to host them and update here. From the tape discussed in this thread does anyone know the track that follows Javetta Steele's "Calling you" and precedes "Steady State" by the PCO?
Thanks in advance - Herbie
PS tape 27 is fab - has Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil, loads of Ennio Morricone, and the theme song from Dracula.

There's no Baghdad Cafe track on this mix?
Maybe you're thinking of another mix in which this is played in between Jevetta steele and The Penguins?....

Sandy you are an absolute legend - thank you so much! I have been trying to find out this track since I bought the tape back in 94 - has a lot of memories, this track in particular. The set has two songs from this LP: good morning america and tim's talk/malibu. I'm indebted to ya

hey - what's the track that starts the 2nd part of the mix that's on this thread? (it precedes PCO "perpetum momentum") [sorry about spelling!] sounds pretty perky, nicely balearic.
