The Saint was long closed by 1990 and Roy Thode was dead 8 years. This mix is from NYE 81/82

It's from NYE 80. That's what it said on The Saint website anyway, you could be right of course. The date on the title of the thread is obviously a little mistake on my part.

Na, its 81-82, as most of the tracks on there wouldnt have been out prior to that. Plus the SAL site isnt really the most pedantic when it comes to the accuracy of its facts. The poster they used for the mix was from the poster for NYE 84-85 when Shaun Buchanan played

Impeccable mixing and great music, very nice mix.
The in-key mixing and combination of matching vocals in different songs is pretty damn classy.

DJs then knew their craft though. You need a real level of determination and fair bit of talent and creativity to be a skilled mixer with live drummers, and also program properly. Comparing most current big names/hot shots to people like Thode and most excellent DJs of his day (Levan, Burgess etc.) is like comparing someone making complex musical compositions to a bedroom producer knocking out house/techno/whatever on a basic 8 track mixer.
Either way tapes of Thode and said company have influenced me far more in terms of how I mix and program music far more than 90% of DJs Ive seen live in clubs (exceptions to that rule: Kevorkian, Theo Parrish, Carter, a few local Dublin guys)
Heres the tracklist, couple of dodgy tracks IMO in there, but as a piece as a whole, its excellent IMO. Comes courtesy of www.themusicliveson.com

Agreed - and what is most impressive is that dj'ing (in a modern sense, beatmixing etc) was really only a fairly new craft when this mix was recorded.
Thanks for the playlist too.

Obviously I cant make this comment from first hand experience as Im too young, but I can imagine you had to be really into music and really dedicated to be a DJ back there. Nowadays between the status symbol people use it as and the accessibility of the artform technically, the world is saturated with people who call themselves DJs, but know nothing much about the actual artform beyond thinking Sasha, Digweed and a whole cast of others are the be all and end all

have a query re: The amazing Jim Burgess mixes from a while ago
did anyone figue out if they were from his last night on Jan 31 1981 or from the closing party in 1988?

Ive said it a few times on here but one mores no hassle: Its DEFINITELY from the closing party in 1988. I know the guy who put the full set up here and hes an ex Saint member. There was only confusion as someone stupidly used the flyer from the 81 party with the mix. This is the party from which its taken:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2329/1922433038_42c8bfb49a.jpg?v=0
The Burgess set is also mentioned in Mel Cherens autobiography though he confuses Candi Staton with Donna Summer when naming tunes

No worries.
Yeah its a pattern Ive noticed on some of the Saint mixes and guys who played there's tapes, but then sure its a acquired taste for most and also, mixes where Id like every track on there are few and far between

Err, that was me. Stupdily is a bit strong, I just got Burgess' 'last' retirement party mixed up with the Saint's last party. I haven't lost too much sleep about it, to be honest.
Anyway, thanks for the tracklisting, really helpful. Iposted it on Faith - credited to you, DJH and themusicliveson.
Been listening to this all day--brilliant! Many thanks for the tracklisting too.
