Thank goodness Juno has saved all my orders as I can't remember any music before October.

Despite all the naysayers, I think it's been another stellar year for music.

Nay. :-D

Music moved forward in 2007, no denying that. For me though, it made far less progress than it did in the last couple of years. There were twists and turns along the way, but sometimes lengthy diversions down routes that were less than scenic, or all too familiar.

Even the journalists couldn't make their minds up - all too easily distracted by the flashbulbs, or lazily hiding under the cloak of Amy, Lily, and Pete's petty mishaps. They need to start putting the "new" back in "news".

We earned our dues....then spent them on the music we love. Our Top 3s are a testament to that. Here's to more (much more) of the same in 2008! ;)

Yes, but only half as much. Rule 5(a), sub-section C1 of the DJ History Almanac Of Affiliation, clearly states that....:

The other half is retrospectively back-dated to the chart from the year of the original release of the record from which the aforementioned edit be derived, along with any interest accrued during the intervening period, on an annual basis. If no such chart exists, the proceeds are evenly divided between all members of the Forum, whom our Governors (Messrs. Brewster & Broughton) judge to be equitable, decent, and in good standing.

Which is none of us really.

So I think that's just a Yes, then. Providing it was released in 2007. :-D

I had a flick through last night, and most of my favourites turn out to be from 2006: Aliens - 'Robot Man', Shackleton, Pinch - 'Qwaali', Cornelius, etc.

Things from 2007:

3. Mudd - Spielplatz - the Quiet Village mix
2. Shackleton - Blood On My hands - Villalobos mix
1. Burial - Etched Headplate

but I also really like

Justus Koencke - Elan - Prins Thomas mix

Well, this is nigh on impossible. I decided against including the tune I've hammered most this year (and has got the best reactions) since, erm, it was a Thumbs Aloft edit thing ('Stick Around' if you must know). Putting in your own stuff looks a bit, erm, wrong. So…

1. Aeroplane - Caramellas (Eskimo)
2. Linkwood Family - Piece Of Mind (Fire Cracker)
3. Dominique Leone - Clairevoyage [A Medley By The 16th Rebels Of Mung] (Feedelity)

If I had more space I'd also include:

Still Going - Still Going Theme (DFA)
Hardway Bros - Voodoo Celebration (Pointless Edits)
Smith & Mudd - Shulme (Claremont 56)
Findlay Brown - Losing The Will To Survive [Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve]
Peter Visti - Dolly (Mindless Boogie)

You've just got to let it run its course - bit like the Fitzheur thing from last year, or the Beck mix. The longer it goes on, the more psychedelic it gets.

Just three is really pushing it... can think of over thirty I'd like to mention! Bit obvious, but here are three that have set alight my heart and respective dancefloors over the year, as well as being a wee bit special.

1) Noze - Remember Love // MBF
The ultimate end of the night tune - pop dynamics with boompty micro beats; jaunty piano vamping with a rousing vocal. Supoib.

2) Frank Hebly - De Tuinslangboogie // Magnetron Music
Unique, genre defying house music. And in '07, that records like this were few and far between.

3) Solomun & Stimming - Eiszauber // Diynamic
Slinky, melodically euphoric, string-soaked lushiousness. Had Legendary Tone dancing to himself with his eyes closed in the corner of The Bank whilst sporting a Cheshire Cat sized grin, so that's recommendation enough, surely!*

*The drugs may have also had something to do with it... :-D

I thin kseveral tunes stand out... although it first came out a while back now, Nicole Willis and The Soul Investigators - Feeling Free is for me by far the best tune of 2007, it's had various remixes and they are still repressing the original, bloody classic tune imo. Thre actually aren't many tunes that don't have a shelf life but this is one I think? I'll thin kof the other two later.

1. Deepchord presents Echospace: Empyrean - understood the pro-Basic Channel argument but still loved the clear homage to this deep, deep tune's dub roots.

2. Yo Son (Prince Language) - found the scratching slightly unrefined so edited it out for home listening. Liked it even more ;)

3. Liz Green, French Singer - obviously not an immediate 'fuck me what a corker!' but potential longevity. Just a lovely tune, equally enjoyable for the folkskies 'round for sunday lunch as late night mellow tackle. Edits come and go, simple solid songwriting like this tends to knock around for a longer on the likeability front.

Very Difficult in a year of IMO great music released and newly discovered:

1) Hatchback - White Diamond (Prins Thomas remix)
2) AMO1 - Brown Piano (Studio remake)
3) John Miles - Stranger in the City (Pilooski edit)

Honorable mentions:
The BTWS remixes (Tracey Thorn, Findley Brown, Midlake)
All of PT's remixes killing it this year (Jape, Sorcerer)
LCD's Freak out/Starry Eyes. rocks the spot everytime.

My mind boggled when these crossed my path - when I was a wee lad we lived in Libya for a cpl of years, Ahmed Fakroun was my music teacher at school one year, made quite an impression, bought my first ever music tapes (vinyl? what vinyl?) aged 9 based on his recommendations - JB, Barry White & Dalida :)

wow! Amazing story!

And

In a close 3rd E.O.A.N - Eyes of a Nation.

I've seen Prins Thomas mix of Studio - Lifes a Beach - posted but the album version is the best.

Five 12"s for the Club:

Moodymann - I'd Rather Be Lonely (with Technology... also released this year, Moodymann has been on good form. This fooker can be played at almost any time, anywhere, and always gets a good reaction, and with two distinct 'halves' I sometimes find myself playing this twice in a night)

Tony Allen - Kilode [Carl Craig remix] (another Detroit producer shows that 'class is permanent' as Liverpool fans are fond of reminding their more successful rivals. Lovely b-line on this)

Johnny Osborne - unknown [Chopstick Dubplate] (in a year that has seen a brilliant revival of authentic/good ragga jungle, this one is on top; Sleng Ten riddim, sing-along vocals, and banging, crashing beats - pure FIYAAA)

Inverse Cinematix - Seven By Seven [Dave De Gato's Bad Arse Tapas Remix] (bouncy, militant, jazz-noir for the club, builds and builds and builds...)

Bob Marley - African Herbsman [Panoptikan remix] (Panoptikan manage a backing beat that is slightly alien, and cold, and shouldn't really work with the warm, emotive lyrics, but it does for me, adding new meaning to "how deep we have to fall")

Five 7"s for early doors:

Grand Magneto - Night Fever/Tainted Love (I like the jaunty, acoustic "Tainted Love", my girlfriend prefers the nodding "Night Fever", both covers are great)

Azymuth - Linha Do Horizonte [Mr Beatnik remix] (this, now this I say, is dreamy bliss. You want belearic?)

Nostalgia 77 - Little Steps (great boombap jazz thing with the most divine horn section I've heard in a bit)

The Dynamics - Miss You (excellent Stones cover)

Lightning Head - Abyssinia Rising (this oddity never fails to get a remark. It sounds incredibly lo-budget, jaunty, and original; imagine Money Mark on decent pills and you'd be halfway there, and that's before Aphex Twin steps in on the tremolo)

Very, very tough for me this year so I've gone for the tracks that made the most impact on me:

Eiszauber - Solomun & Stimming
Shot Caller - Baby Oliver
Track 1 (45:33) - LCD Soundsystem

Honourable mentions:
Ready My Mind - Metro Area
Sun in the Sky (Henrik Schwarz rexmi) - Kraak & Smaak
Shot Caller - Baby Oliver
Here Today - Al Usher
Spacerock - Golem Edits
Sly & Mongoose - Bad Pulse (Padded Cell remix)
Reverso 68 - Piece Together Part 2 (Todd Terje Mix)
Tracks 2-4 (45:33) - LCD Soundsystem

Big year for LCD Soundsystem for me - I've loved pretty much everything they've done. "Props" also to Burial for producing an electronic album that feels genuinely different. I've been revisitng the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas album which is blowing my mind more and more - as is Prins' DJing and the duo's Essential Mix

Trusme - Nards >>> this came out around this time of year in 2006 on the EP, but I guess it's late enough to count as an 07 release, or you could count the LP version. Sorry, the pedant in me couldn't resist.

I went out and grabbed a copy of the Tony Allen Mauritz Von Oswald remix jobby as a few here have championed it... very nice. Quite chilled, and probably a good 'un for early doors, setting the mood, but I think Mark's Dub was a better release, and Carl Craig's the best of the lot. But I haven't Heard the Hot8 Brass Ensemble thing either - any good?

Man I love this thread - aside from picking out the top records of the year from the people whose opinons I care about the most, it's great to just go through ALL the picks, regardless of order or preference and hunt the tracks down, see what you've been missing out on.

I know I'll be hitting up Juno early next year to track down the few that "got away".

I'm correct in assuming that there will be a run down on Bill's radio show, like last year?

In no particular order but they have been enjoyed by me this year ...
Theo Parrish - The Rink
Moodymann - Technologystolemyvinyl
Luke Vibert - Radio Savalas
Steve Reid - Daxaar (how could I forget this - waited all year for it ... proper jazz meets deep house!)

Revival pressure ...
Mighty Baby - Egyptian Tomb ...
Wallias Band - Muziqawi Silt - from best of Ethiopiques (actually this is from the past ...so replacing here)
Marlene Dietrich - Falling in love again (live in London with Burt Bacharach - esp the final refrain ! Wow !)

bonus track on the Blue River CD - the best thing to come out of St Albans since school trips to see the roman ruins.

I still cant make up mind. Does LCD SOUNDSYSTEM's 45:33 track 3 on the lp count? "That day you gave me a new faith in the way people consider one another instead of always putting out your hands to CRUSH!" Runaway's Shadows was killer - No Doubt. and the Amplified Orchestra records rocked the skylights out! Electricity!!! ouch. "YOU CAN'T HELP BUT DANCE!" I guess I just made up my mind. Happy 08! May it be a bold one. oTHERWISE who in the funk do you think you rrrrrrrr?
