Seems like there is some interest in the music played by Fat Ronny at the AB (Ancien Belgique / Antwerp) during the '80ties. See the New Beat thread by Ichi.One.
Here is side A of a tape with some typical AB music as it was called ...

download AB side A (http://www.walkthenight.be/auf/AB side A.mp3)
stream AB side A (http://www.walkthenight.be/auf/AB side A.m3u)

I'll upload side B later ...

PS : This mix wasn't recorded at the AB.

great stuff - thank you - and thank you ichi for the new beat one (havent had a chance to listen to it yet) - recognised ministry (is Al J still alive?), eurythmics, and simple minds - does anyone know the last track which sounds as if it should be big audio dynamite?

last track of side A is Westworld / Sonic Boom Boy (one of the few tracks on this tape I don't have).

Here is Side B :

Tim

I don't consider them new beat either. It was always a combination of different styles, including new beat. That is what AB music was all about. It's not a genre, it's combining records from very different musical styles (wave, pop, electro, ebm, new beat, house, krautrock, jazz, rap, ...) to create a special atmosphere (often just one song on an entire LP that sounded a little different). It was called AB music because it was played at the AB (like "Balearic" or even better "Cosmic").
I remember hearing Mathar by the Dave Pike Set for the very first time. This was a huge AB favorite. I believe it was discovered by Harry "superbranché" Van Loen who took it to the LD radio show. Nobody knew what it was at the time. They played it and mixed it with a lot of jingles in order to prevent someone from taping and playing it (I think I still got that show somewhere). They didn't give any title off course. It sounded so different and special. Jazz with a sitar and it blended perfectly with all the other music ... Or Your Love by Frankie Knuckles and other early house tracks. But to us it wasn't house. The word house didn't even exist ! It was just another very special sounding record that fitted the vibe perfectly. It was like that all the time. Dj's discovering and playing great music and everyone else trying to find out what it was (and no internet that gave you an answer in 5 seconds :) ).

Hard to imagine that back then LD had a fanbase among highschool kids.

I blame the interweb.

King K.

Some "tatouages" in there indeed, Hagakurre.

Hard to imagine that back then LD had a fanbase among highschool kids.

Well, a friend in school told me about the LD radio show and gave me some tapes. I was hooked immediately. But only 3 or 4 people in my class really liked this kind of music. So it really was a minority. The others just didn't get what was going on and they preferred listening to the doors and sixties stuff, etc. that we thought was old and boring ... So it really was them against us. They didn't accept our music and in return we started to hate what they were listening to (allthough, looking back it wasn't all crap music off course). They also confused this music with the very commercial new beat and blamed us for listening to this stupid music, which we didn't like either ... But they just didn't know better. I guess that's why I still don't want to use the word "new beat".
On the other hand, allthough a minority, there was a decent scene of (young) people who loved this music and were very open to new music (like all the early house tracks that were emerging). So I completely understand what you mean. It was about pushing new music. The more unknown, the better. And certainly not playing what everyone else was already playing. As much as we were thrilled when a dj played a song we never heard before, it's like those young kids don't accept a dj playing something they don't already know. I blame our national youth radio for that too. They were totally ignoring all this exciting music when it was new and fresh. They were even laughing with it, because good old fashioned rock music was in their heads the only way to go. And now after more than 20 years they finally start playing dance music and fuck up an entire generation of kids by pushing clueless readymade dancemusic, that has become the new mainstream rock. So in fact they still haven't got a clue what's really going on. But every kid that listens to their shows thinks they are getting the coolest music out there ... not ! (Sorry for this rant)
On the other hand I wonder if it's still possible to be original. Every dj set is on internet 5 minutes after it's finished. PLaylists appear 5 seconds later. Getting those records is just one push of a button ... I guess it's hard for a dj nowadays to compile his own set of records, create a unique atmosphere and to be able to do this long enough to get his own audience.

Still one of my favourites too ...

Right now I'm after a mix called "Welcome To The Pleasuredome". 3 hours of classic stuff typical for the Liaisons Dangereuses radio show. It was aired on 15/06/89 (maybe I should wait another year and "rerelease" it after 20 years) ... I'll let you guys know when it's online.

Have you checked those files on megaupload Jolyon ? Looks like it's the one. I only have one part of this mix on tape. A friend of mine still has the complete 3 hours and he has access to the original reel 2 reel tapes too. that's what I wanted to digitize, if only I found some time. But it looks like this mix is already out there ...

Here is the original playlist they made ...

yes, i've had this mix for a couple of years - i would have done you a copy if i'd known you didn't have it! i think it was up on the liaisons website until they took the site down!

Great to see the original artwork of this mix. I've had it for a while (thanks Moon) and love it. On the back of this I e mailed Paul Ward of LD and he promised to send me some more mixes, alas he never did despite several further e mails from me badgering him. So that brings me to the next question - does anybody have anymore recordings of the LD shows?

I also have a Fat Ronny recording from '82 and contacted him recently. He didn't have the recording so I made him a copy and sent him it. Sadly, he didn't seem to have any mixes from his radio shows.

Peace,

Paul Ward gave me this three hour special along with the artwork. I sent it to Jolyon and I assume it's been virally spread over the years. It's ace.

I forgot about the pleasure dome mix, but I still had the original playlist, thinking it was the playlist of the "decadent zone" (check out my site www.walkthenight.be for the "decadent zone"). Then I realized it was a totally different mix and wanted to put it online too, not knowing it was already out there. I never realized people are still interested in those old Liaisons tapes, untill I put some of them on my site and got a lot of reactions.

@Cosmic Jane -> I have some more recordings from the LD show, but most of them aren't good enough to put online. I mean the shows were good, but I messed up the tapes (stopping the recording when I didn't like a song etc.). I can't remember Fat Ronny had a radio show. He was the dj at the AB club and played this kind of music. Paul Ward and Sven Van Hees more or less copied what he was doing at the AB to create their radio show and made the music available to a broader public (it could be Fat Ronny did a few shows when Sven Van Hees went to Ibiza).

@Ichi -> Fat Ronny the next Baldelli ? They did comparable stuff (at least during the '80 ties) - same records / slowing down the music, etc... This is why I was looking through my old LD tapes in the first place. Because of all the Cosmic and Baldelli hype. It sounded so familiar to the music I knew from the LD show and what was played at the AB club. I still wonder if this is just a coincidence (maybe something for Bill to find out). Are these the kind of records that were played in a lot of other places too or was there a connection. And what about Ronny & Renzo. What's their connection to the AB sound. Ok, they are from Antwerp, so that's an obvious connection, but their mystery mix at times sounded very AB-ish to me ...

other side of the playlist

http://www.walkthenight.be/img/playlist2.jpg

And I just found out the missing song from the AB mix.

White House White / Ouverture. (not Art Of Noise after all)

I just called a friend to ask him what this was. He's like a living encyclopedia when it comes to remembering title songs, exact release date, original label, artists ... (I don't use discogs,I just give him a call :) ). I thought he made this AB-mix, but he's not sure either. We'll check it out. At least he's gonna contact Paul Ward for some more stuff and look through his own collection of tapes (seems like there might be some interesting mixes coming up ...)

The MP3 I'm listening to as side b has Alan Rankine & Carlos Peron on it? This one: http://www.walkthenight.be/auf/LD1-B.mp3

OK so I bought Smersh and it is the track just before The Worries track, but it's not the track I'm after. After Automan there is a spoken word piece saying something about it being late then there is this slow slightly acidic track then Smersh. Anybody know what the track is?

Cheers,

C

@ Cosmic Jane, you are looking for Carlos Peron - Nothing is true; everything is permitted
from the S/T album.

@ Jolyon, that tracklist is from the LD parts King K posted a few posts earlier.

i live 3km from the Destelbergen so today while driving to Ghent
i took the camera with me

this is the way the Boccaccio looks in 2008
nothing changed except the aluminum facade used to be concrete
and there was a big logo on it

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9746/bocacz4.jpg

yes it's just a gray box, typical belgian club design,
all the money went into the interior design, lots of mirrors
i think even the stairs had mirror glass :-D

and the carrera club next door is for sale,
so if you wanna invest in a New Beat revival this is a golden opportunity
Carrera was very important for the success of the Boccaccio club

Thanks King K for the links. Enjoying the mix very well!

The mega upload is always a problem. Anybody can link up the 3 parts of the Liaisons Dangereuses Radio Show? Sendspace is always work for us here.

Cheers and thanks!
