I think theres a fair bit of confusion in this thread about this mix. The flyer initially posted above is from a Jim Burgess 'retirement' party form 1981.

Basically Burgess had been one of the initial 3 residents at the Saint along with Alan Dodd and Roy Thode, from its opening on Sept. 20th 1980. He decided he wanted to knock the DJing on its head in Jan. 1981 to go off and become a tenor. During the party for the above flyer, he famously walked out at the peak of the night and left the record run out. That said he didnt actually retire and still did infrequent gigs in NY after that and started playing regularly at the Saint again in 1986. His actual last gig according to comments made by his partner in a feature about him was at The Ice Palace in 1989. He died in Jan. 1993

The actual mix which is posted here is Jim Burgess' set from the closing night of the Saint on May 2nd 1988, where he played the second last set of the weekend before Robbie Leslie

Not particularly. I remember hearing it and thinking that was probably the situation for him at the time. That said, the mix had been put up on the Candelas site and labelled as being from 1985. This was initially disputed as Burgess wasnt DJing in the Saint at that time and the Cliff Richard record wasnt out til 87.

I subsequently found out when I got the full set of tapes shortly after privately that not only was the mix on the candelas site, two different parts of a 45 min tape spliced together and not chronologically, but also that the set was from the last night of the Saint in 1988 and not in 1985 as suggested. Having read the excellent feature about him on the disco disco website where his partner was interviewed, I would say the lyrics had nothing to do with personal heartbreak and all to do with the closing of the Saint, which for most I can imagine was on a par with losing a loved one at that point

TBH I think a lot of the music played in the faster parts of this mix and on that scene are quite divisive in that you either love it or hate it. Personally speaking I love all that rare lush disco from 77 - 81 or so that was big with this crowd, yet I wouldnt be a massive fan of the more industrial stuff that woulda been played in the Saint in its latter years. That said, I think this mix is a magical representation of what I can imagine that club was all about

Masterful programming indeed. Before I even d/l, the occasion and the playlist immediately reminded me of FK (in Fleming's 'What kind of house party?' book) talking about Levan's last Japan tour before his death, where he would always play The spirit's in it and Time waits for no one, FK saying Levan knew he was dying then. As mentioned, the closure of such a club must have felt like death to some/many, not least JB.

I also find myself feeling lactose intolerant at various bits of this but context is everything I guess. Many of these songs on their ownsome do nothing for me, very much a f/fw moment as you say, but together it all makes sense of course, and the mixing is sweet. Great mix obviously for the historian in all of us (if I get it correctly it's like the portuguese saudade thing - a nostalgia for something we didn't actually experience but can feel all the same). It's like watching a gay disco soap opera this :)

I also truly miss in this post house world that there seems to be very little focus today on lyrics on the dance floor, not that there too many good dance ones these days. Pity also about the lack of DJs doing emotional rollercoaster story-telling, even Mancuso doesn't really, not in London anyway.

CLiff is all about the words innit? COntext again. Funny though how bits of this mix would look classic balearic on paper today, if a DJH mix contained SOme people we'd have an endless debate about whether it is or isn't. One man's balearic, another man's generic. Cliff confirming his status as gay icon, wonderful.

Thats the set from the last night of the Saint in 1988, not his 'retirement' party in 81. AFAIK this is the only set of his doing the rounds on the web. The smaller one taken from the Candelas site which was on here a few years back, is actually just two bits from this mix spliced together

I must have got this last time it came across DJH.. really like it and the vocal ones not usually my cup of tea, but just have to appreciate for context and how he can just make anything work inbetween the right 2 records on either side of it. i've learned to really let myself go into the deep melted cheese on these but it so works. anyway, i had this image embedded to my MP3 for some reason, some might enjoy it, not sure if this is the correct date when set was recorded?
