Up until yesterday I was under the impression that this mix was done my David Morales (it was his name on the tape), however it now seems that a favourite Pal Joey party trick (thanks Paul) was to cut the Basil Hardhaus track “Hard for the DJ” at the point it says Pal Joey. Pal Joey was over in England, playing the Ministry of Sound and Moist at the same time as Larry Levan, Tony Humphries and Kenny Carpenter - all of which Carl was given mix tapes of from London producer/dj and ex staff member at Zoom and Black Market - Rob Mello. So it looks like after 15 years of thinking it was Morales who did this amazing mix, it was actually Pal Joey.
This is my favourite mix of all time, the night Carl brought this and the Levan tape round to our flat we immediately blasted them out continually for about 18 hours - with 6/7 of us dancing like loons on a cocktail of doves and purple ohms, going fucking crazy - the best night in i’ve probably ever had.
It took years for us (Carl, Birks and me) to track down all the tracks on this mix (remember this was pre-internet days, where you couldn’t just ask someone on a forum), and there is still the very first track that I don’t know, so if anyone does know it please let me know.
I hope people enjoy this mix as much as I still do, for my money it is house music at its peak (ce ce peniston aside):

Listened to it this morning, classic NY house, many thanks for sharing. It was actually Nov 16 1991, remember because I left London for NY about a month and half later. Wasn't there for this but wish I had been, did go and hear Levan/Rosado and Tony Humphries, great nights although my memory of the crowd is as an odd mix of the enthused (in the middle of the dancefloor going crazy) and the confused (shuffling around the edges looking at the speaker stacks like they were visitors from another planet).

its this - http://www.discogs.com/release/265824
though mine had a yellow middle bit
it was done by kevorkian looping just the very first part (about the first 20 seconds) of the rare earth track. i belive it was inspired by walter gibbons mixing two copies of the track and switching like crazy between the two.
there is some info about it in Bill's book.

Thankyou very much for sharing, this highlighted a great time for me in regards dancing and losing myself to house music, it was a time that the music had a swing and deepness and even at MOS you could lose yourself at 6-7 or later in the morning to real deep house !.
Funny thing as well, I had the good fortune to have dinner with the sound engineer at MOS - 91-94 last night.
Peace and thanks again.
I'd be curious to hear the Levan at MOS tape ?.

know the feeling re tracking down track names - remember the joy at finding underground inc's 'magic noire' in san francisco in 96-97 - there was guy over at a shop in berkeley (chris somebody) who I played a few tracks to on my walkman, he ID'd a few - I then wanderd down the street and dug 2 copies!
others I just stumbled across collecting stuff over the last 10-15 years
only just ID'd ESP - 'it's you' off the Rahaan faith christmas mix earlier this year!
bizarrely enough the first track is one I can help out on!
it's The Tone - 'Love'll save the day', the track appeared on the first mixmag tape with danny rampling

thanks for the ID, some one has named ity already - but thanks anyway.
underground inc's 'magic noire' - I knew what this was for quite some time (as my mate Carl already had it) but it alluded me for years. One day I travelled down to London with the missus, in the car on the way I was telling her that if I could just find this one record then i'd be well happy. I walked into Reckless Records in Soho and found it almost immediately - £2. Talk about buzzing!

one half of this mix (can't remember which) used to be on the faith website and was also listed as levan on there.
would like to get to the bottom of this, what makes you think its rosado, which half do you think is rosado? were they both playing on the same night?
has anyone got a recording of levan from that same visit to the uk, or know of the whereabouts of one?

I'm sure Alex can clarify, but certainly Victor was there when Larry was spinning, and would often open for him, and/or take over at various points in the night.
There are some great memories stirring in my loins!
Incidentally, these were the days before the MOS had really caught on with London clubbers, also US DJ fever hadn't really started either, so the dancefloor was never more than half full on these special nights.

PM Dawn onwards I'd thought was Larry. Only because of the internet though (and I think this has been discussed in this thread > http://www.djhistory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14972 <).
It did get confusing with Levan and Rosado. It was the same at Moist, I'd turn round and check the booth and Victor would be on and not Larry.
That Farsides review of Moist was curious. I find the "elfin boyfriends" thing particularly funny. Thanks for that Scott - never seen it before.

i would have said the same until i realised the mix i revered more than any other was infact pal joey
now my only fallback for morales is a night in leeds when he played lots of quite commercial garage stuff - i wasn't a happy bunny!
i still love him though - just because of the number of ace red zone mixes he did

as you know cj i have some, but i still haven't figured out how to turn tape into mp3 cos i is thick like that.
i've got some bert bevans (criminally under-rated), justin berkmann (ditto) and a supposed todd terry one where he plays all his own stuff (but still rocks it).
do i need soundforge or can i d/l something free off the net ? a can of worms will be opened once i get this sorted.

Hi Trackwerk,
Hope your well, it just feels like Victor, I have many mixes from him during this time and the mix also features Victor's reel to reel only mix of Eurythmics and Happy Song Or dance. I have actually sent him a link to the mix to clarify so hopefully we should know soon ?.
I hope people can hear what it was like to go to MOS at this time and you better believe that there were many instances that the Disco records would not be that welcomed on the dancefloor there, that's as I remember from my time spent there. They did sound pretty amazing though, that system was all encompassing.
Anyway time to get the head out of the past !.

Hey Alex,
It's been a while since I heard the mix in question, but I believe the Eurythmics/Happy Song or Dance mix was actually a UK bootleg.
Without mentioning names, it was initiated by a fella who used to run various record labels, and actually done/engineered by a good friend of mine.
It was pressed onto a clear vinyl in the early 90's.
Now it is possible that they recreated what Victor had previously done, but my friend has absolutely no reason to make up the story as he has always remained behind the scenes of the industry, however close to the limelight that particular curtain hangs.
Does anyone here actually own that vinyl? Maybe they can compare the 2. I think I have 1, but I don't think it is marked on the label so I will never find it on my rack.
Anyway, back to the future.
OR back to the future of the past.
Dang, those were good times.

Hi Allnew,
Really, Victor said that he did it live and it was recorded onto reel to reel, the thing is to me it sounds like a live DJ mix as such ?. It was a staple mix that feat in Victor's sets in early 90's.

Hi allnew,
No worries bro, I just thought best it would be good to get the full story from Victor etc. Victor was here a few years back on a series of good gigs inc a real nice session at Soulsonic that we manged to get him. Victor for me has a great feel for the music and how to present it, he really is one of the best out there in playing music.
You can check out his a mix from his live radio show he used to broadcast from home..

Sweet Dreams was huge on the black gay scene here back then, particularly among the "children," the young gay men from the ball scene. I remember being a little surprised to find this out, just knowing the track as a UK pop hit. Junior Vasquez would play it sometimes late on a Sunday morning and they'd all be going off.

Cheers Scott for posting, great memories. I remember that night very well, I got there after a long night DJing at the infamous CJ's in Sheffield and caught the last few hours of that sesh. On arrival I found a very trashed flat and an old biddy at the door from three streets away moaning about the noise. I think it was me that sold you the Fast Eddie track only to now have it back from you once again! Happy days, great mix and so pleased to have it again. The tape I had just got played too much. There'll be a few peeps logging in for the download, will spread the word.
PS. I do recall a seeing you belting out Ce Ce in Willy's on a few occasions. ;) (Let's blame the Ohm's shall we)
As for Pal Joey, I'm 90% sure he played Venus (Notts) around that time too.
He still has a web site with all his tracks for listen/download.

:) i remember you arriving at about 7am
you been to hong kong yet? if so, how did it go?
thanks for telling everybody i used to play ce ce btw :wtf::)

Hi
After listening to this mix tape over the past 15 or so years I'm shocked to hear it may not even be David Morales! Amazed to hear that other people out there still listen to this one though. For info I bought my copy from camden market and the front cover looked liked this LoL:

Also, just thought I'd let you know you actually missed out a track from the list below ;) Whilst playing Bubbles, Pal/David keeps cutting in Dance by Earth People (the 'Beats' version) and at one point he mixes out to Earth People completely before fading Bubbles back in. Just thought I'd let you know anyway.
:)
I hope people enjoy this mix as much as I still do, for my money it is house music at its peak (ce ce peniston aside):

your quite right John about Earth People being in there - I was just being lazy when I typed out the tracklisting.
Since it being pointed out that it was Pal Joey and not David Morales, it actually became quite obvious that it is Pal Joey if you consider that the following tracks off the mix were produced by him:
Tickle - Bubbles/Earth People Dance
Underground Inc. - Magic Noire
Pal Joey - Party Time
Beautiful People - I Got The Rhythm
and that Basil Hardhaus - Hard for the DJ ends on the Pal Joey bit.

Well, at the end of the day if the music is good I guess it doesn't really matter who mixed it. Anyway good to hear others love that tape as much as me.

The first week Levan played the Ministry he played on his own as far as I know and played the Happy Song & Dance boot in its entirety... NOT the Eurythmics cut up. I thought he was mixing that break live what with all that pre-Pioneer phasing... of course I later realised I already owned it on the flipside of the Visage/Hashim mash-up, complete with ready made phasing. Glad I owned it but a bit disappointing all the same! Great night though.
The week after Victor Rosado played before Larry and this could well be his set. I've heard part of Larry/Victor's set from that night on DHP I think. The bit I remember is the cutting between The Pressure and its acapella intro... agreed, a great great period for going out and dancing to house music.
