That is more of a comilation of singles, and may never reach "classic" status, but it is playing in the background right now and I may as well give it props because it is soooo damn good.

I find it rather strange that people are more willing to post in a thread bashing 5 classic lps, rather than praising them. Oh well, here is my last effort to keep this thread alive.
One of my all time favorite LPs of ANY genre:

King Tubby's Special
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Nu Yorican Soul
Soundtrack to National Lampoon's Animal House (aye, a belter ihmo!)
Aphex Twin Ambient Works Vol. 1 85-92
(and I only know Leo's beauty 'give me the sunshine', haven't but will get the lp on your say so)

this album combined some of the best hip hop producers at that time and nas had a stlyle & flow like nobody else at that point. one of my favourite hip hop albums besides jungle brothers "done by the force of nature", diamond d's "stunts, blunts & hip hop", big daddy kane's "long live the kane", a tribe called quest's "midnight marauders".. and the list goes on.. so many great memories..
and i'm with donger about the "see mi yah" album. i'm still grateful to the guy who introduced me to the whole rhythm & sound universe..

No bother Lexx, hear you. Memories are what it's ALL about really. Leaving aside 'critics choice', which most people on here will, memory's the foundation of threads like this and what makes it tricky. Aside from the Nas rubtuz thang which always went down a storm, I've no standout memories of this LP and I do own it. Not saying it ain't a goody though!

Bugger memories, Illmatic is a track-for-track classic. It's unbelievable that every LP he's made since has been so-so.

you're right lurk, i'm probably not very objective when it comes to this album. if somebody at the store would ask me for a good 90's hip hop album i would rather hand them a tribe called quest record because they're more playful & musical..

OMG yes on the Marvin Gaye, that shit is brilliant on every level. It's so deep it almost borderlines psychadelic without trying to be.
I mustr confess to never have even heard that Talk Talk LP.

ditto, i had the vinyl lp and only liked 1 or 2 tracks at first. recently i picked up the remastered double cd and really got into it. it's not only the songs but also the way that they're recorded & mixed which make it a classic to me.

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Congos - Heart Of The Congos
Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman

One reason I've taken so long to get into this here thread is that I have no idea how to narrow it down to 5 albums - I'm constantly changing my mind! Anyway, sticking to "5 Classic Albums That etc." rather than my favourite 5 albums:
The Band - The Band
Sly - Riot
Dylan - Highway 61
The Stones - Sticky Fingers
Grateful Dead - Live Dead
Notable how little black music there is in that list, coming from a black music fanatic. Is this because most black music has been singles-driven, so with a few exceptions (Gaye, Wonder) very few "classic albums" were produced? And great albums by black artists - Heart of the Congos, Al Green is Love etc. haven't been widely praised enough to be regarded as "classic"? If we could include compilation albums...

Yeeeeees! So glad to see Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain on here!
The lyrics crack me up everytime -
'our map showed no rainfall'.....
'...i somehow can't imagine her planting rice all-day..'
'..they're specially flavoured with Burgundy Tizer and Rye..'
Lovely stuff!
Not his most celebrated work but proper genius nonetheless.

That Sly & Robbie LP's ace
Interesting thing about the "Dub Experience" album is that the dubs are so heavily fucked with...."Demolition City" for instance is a dub version of "Baltimore". Now there is the regular dub version of Baltimore, which is pretty much standard dubness (remove the vocal, bit of echo here and there) and then there is Demolition City...which is utterly mangled...in a really great way of course...

Talking of 23 (cut us some slack, I did ask the original question ;) ), anyone recall Cleveland Watkiss and Project 23?
'23' was a cracking tune and extolls the virtues of this thread, stylee.

I went to see him play live at Sheperds Bush last Saturday. Some moments of absolute genius (ie when he played the Tubeway Army numbers) but the nu-metal, sub-NIN new stuff was turd.

I was so close to meeting the man. Few years back when Circulation was on at the George IV in Brixton, well, Sherman said he was having a drink/interview with the man prior to the evening and was trying to twist his arm into making an appearance..Gazza declined, I was gutted.

I do find rat pack stuff most interminable nowadays. It's invariably played to death (the next time I hear New York, New York at a wedding I’m getting on a plane. To New York), and that whole delivery of smooth jazz has just become grating. It doesn't help that you get little shits like that kid off X-Factor attempting to rejuvenate the genre with their crap cover versions either.
I can see why it had the popularity it did but I personally think it belongs in the past now.
What's the general consensus on rat pack stuff on the board? Or is this something for a whole other thread?

this is not "rat pack stuff" and is miles away from New York, New York and that cliched lounge bullshit. It's a beautiful album about growing old, with some great arrangements by Gordon Jenkins. Buy the CD and see.

exactly - add Wee Small Hours which is another blue tear stained early morning musing on a world of trouble and a life gone wrong then skip to H.M.V on his colloboration with Anton Carlos Jobim absolutely flippin essential on a par with Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane in terms of beauty.

I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread to put photos up. I still don't know how to properly quote other posts. How can one do that? DOH!To quote, just hit the "quote" button in the lower right area of the post you are wanting to quote. If you would like to quote many different quotes, just click the quoatation marks symbol in the same area, and then hit reply, and they will all be quoted.
The easiest way to insert pictures is just to copy and paste them. Simply right click (on a PC) on the picture, and select "copy". Then in the reply box, just click paste. Doesn't always work, but often times does. other than that, you can also put "img" inbetween these kind of brackets"[]", and then "/img" at the end.

ditto, i had the vinyl lp and only liked 1 or 2 tracks at first. recently i picked up the remastered double cd and really got into it. it's not only the songs but also the way that they're recorded & mixed which make it a classic to me.
once again, ditto, but it hit me hard right away... the performances are unbelievably loose... and the production & mix are incredible... dynamic mixing in all its glory - both hands on the console, one channel per finger...
I mean, "Laughing"? - hear it at my funeral....

We;ve obviously got divergent opinions because it all went downhill after Reckoning, surely their crowning glory. Murmur is very good. Fables is really quite poor, IMO, certainly compared to the previous two. The rest I can take or leave.

Yes, the sound def IS muddy on that reissue and that certainly didnt help, tho naturally I try to hear past that... as the OG is so expensive it seemed like a 'good way in' to finally getting to hear a usually out-of-reach classic.
