general setup for laptop to mixer..l

i am looking to hook up my laptop for bar gigs incorporating into the vinyl too
whats the score on this with regards to setup, basically running into line channel/mixer for ease of switch vinyl etc.
pros and cons appreciated....

Run a minijack-to-phono cable from your headphone out socket into a line-in input in the mixer? Pref on its own channel, but if not, switching between phono and line as required?

Or for better sound quality get a USB/Firewire audio interface - M-Audio do a range of relatively inexpensive ones or spend a fortune on RME or Metric Halo and sound like FK (or TTauri!).
