For The final Eyes Down of 2005, we pleased to see a return visit from some of the finest DJ’s in the business, the mighty Jazzanova. Originally formed in 1995, from production to DJing to remixes, this 6 strong outfit have been at the forefront of Europe’s forward thinking music scene for the last 10 years.

Starting out as a DJ outfit, their weekly club night in Berlin saw them forge a distinctively diverse style. As time went on they moved into production, joining forces with Munich’s Compost Records to form JCR, and releasing their now legendary debut EP ‘Fedime’s Flight’. They released their debut LP ‘In Between’ to widespread critical acclaim. Perpetually leading the way in electronic music, its extraordinary breadth took in jazz, hip hop, house, broken beats and latin ideas to create something entirely new, and featured contributions from the likes of Vikter Duplaix and Ursula Rucker. They also used the JCR imprint to release other people’s music, most notably the RIMA project from Volcov and Eyes Down favourite Domu.

Over the years Jazzanova have also become some of the most in demand remixers in the world. They have provided remixes for the likes of 4Hero, Roy Davis Jnr, Ursula Rucker, UFO, Azymuth, Incognito, MJ Cole, as well the classic remix of Ian Pooley’s ‘What’s Your Number’, many of which were featured on their benchmark Jazzanova Remixed Collection on JCR. With the same approach as their original productions, their mixes can take in the full breadth of forward thinking music, from hip hop to techno. The time has come for them to unveil the second instalment of their remixes collection. This time releases on their own Sonar Kollectiv label, it features more classic reworks for the likes of Masters At Work feat Roy Ayers, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shaun Escoffery and Free Design.

Now taking on the roles of producers, label managers, remixers, and engineers, Jazzanova are, first and foremost DJ’s. They apply the same painstaking approach as to their production, creating unique sets that take in the entire range of deep leftfield music, from every possible tempo and era without ever seeming random of ill thought out. They are incredibly dancefloor friendly DJ’s who compromise nothing in terms of playing deep, interesting and incredibly rare music and their sets are consistently full of twists and surprises, while maintaining a seamless flow. This talent has led to them becoming some of the most popular DJs in the world, regularly touring Europe, Japan, and America as well as playing at festivals across the world. As well as their fanatical interest in the latest music, they are also committed diggers of old, forgotten gems, as can be seem in their compilations of old music, from their collections of Polish and West German jazz, to their ‘Secret Love’ folk compilations, and their selection of tracks from the infamous Blue Note Records Vaults.

Any of you who saw jazzanova the last time they played at Eyes Down will undoubtedbly remember that it was one of the best nights we’ve ever had, with music ranging from deep jazz, soul and latin to techno, drum and bass, broken beats and hip hop. Needless to say we’re very exited about their return visit.

Please note: The last time Jazzanova came to Eyes Down it was incredibly oversubscribed, and this appearance will be at a significantly smaller venue, so advance tickets are going to be essential!!
