The Furtive 50, 2008
Every year we ask the DJhistory.com forum bods, as well as our favourite DJs, producers, editors and candle stick makers, to give us their opinion on what was the best of the best of the year's musical magnificence. These are the results from way back in 2008, when Mark E was a young upstart, Golf Channel were just making it a hat trick of releases and the mighty Grace Jones made a magnificent comeback.
1. Laughing Light Of Plenty – The Rose (Whatever We Want)
A rose by any other name. House music at its most indie, psychedelic and wigged-out best. A bassline to slay any discerning dancefloor. This is our number 1!
2. Hercules & Love Affair – Blind (Frankie Knuckels Remix)
Future-retro styling from New York's latest disco super group. Vocals by Anthony Heggarty (of and the Johnsons fame) on this straight-up house remix from Mr Knuckles himself.
3. Mugwump - Boutade (Misericord)
Boutade apparently means 'thrust', which is exactly what this does. Belgium's finest puts a rocket up your local discoteque.
4. Grace Jones – Williams Blood (Yam Who Remix) (Jones)
Grace Jones retuned with an epic album and a heap of remixes of this her second single. Remixers included Greg Wilson and Aeroplane but Yam Who came out on top in our chart.
5. Simon Baker – Plastik (Todd Terje Remix) (Playhouse)
Todd Terje 'Turkatechs' Simon Baker's big room house stonker, adding a bit of a wiggle and extending the cut of his jib. Terje has been all over the place this year but his is one of, if not his best effort.

6. Ghost Note - Holy Jungle (Golf Channel)
The first of two Golf Channel tracks in this year's chart. There is something both celestial and supernatural about this track, either way it is definitely excellent.
7. Dolle Jolle – Balearic Incarnation (Permanent Vacation)
Another member of Scandinavian unversal boogie massive. An un-prenounceable name and piece of faux-Baleraric excellence.

Bassline of the year! Maurice Fulton drops a huge slice of twised, acid inspired boogie music.

9. Try To Find Me – Make Dance (Golf Channel)
Golf Channel continue their crusade to release nothing but the coolest of the cool. Two edits of completely un-tracable origin for those languid Mediterranean afternoons
10. Rondenion – The Beautiful Memory (Aesthetic Audio)
Part of the Tokyo Deep release, this is a slow motion groove-athon of epic proportions.
11. Larry heard– 25 Years From Alpha (Alleviated)
Legend alert! Larry Heard drops fifteen minutes of meloncholic computer funk, full of wavering melodies and super duper space age synths. Amazing.
12. Omar S – Psychotic Photosynthesis (FXHE)
A huge track that feels timeless even after only a single listen. Omar S steps up and fully justifies his ever growing reputation.
13. Soundstream – Live Goes On/Dance With Me (Sound Stream)
Chopped up and looped within a 12 inch of it's life, this is a two-for-one disco-house vibed special, as both are so good you coudln't seperate them.
14. Toby Tobias – The Feeling (Rekids)
Stepping into the big time, Toby Tobias smashed his way into our top twenty with the help of northern disco/soul-songstress, Kathy Diamond

16. Invisible Conga People – Cable Dazed (Italians Do It Better)
Trying to rescue the Conga from Black Dice and Wedding dancefloor hell, these clandestine cable dancers leave us dazed but never confused.
17. Afefe Iku – Mirror Dance (Yoruba Soul)
Not as some believe another moniker for Osunlade, this is a massive African influenced piece of house music with this year's most distinctive melody.

DJhistory friend and excellent producer as well as DJ, Neville Watson teams up with Kink to get heavy.

19. Mujava – Township Funk (Warp)
The first Kwaito house tune to get cross-over play, this is house music township style, gritty raw and utterly addictive.

20. MGMT – Time To Pretend (Cantora)
American indie pranksters took time from singing about electric eels to pen this fantastic bit of Americana inspired elctro-pop.
21. Icasol – Ongou (Idjut Boys Remix) (Claremont 56)
Gorgous , cinematic vibes from this idjuts mix on Mudd's amazing boutique label.
22. Motor City Drum Ensemble – Raw Cuts #3 (MCDE)
A German tribute to The Motor City in more than name alone. Prime cuts of jacking "raw" house music, with just a little melodic twist.
23. Ane Brun – Headphone Silence (Henrik Schwarz Mix) (Objektivity)
Henrik Schwarz turns Norwegian folk singer Ane Brun's amazing vocal into a lilting, meloncholic piece of almost progressive house.
24. Mock & Toof – Big Hands For A Lady (Tiny Sticks)
The tell-tale sign to look out for, for any drunk 'traveller' in Thailand and also in this case the tell-tale sign of a quality piece of music.
25. Runaway – Brooklyn Club Jam (DFA)
NYC residents Runaway write a track dedicated to the fast growing Brooklyn party scene. It's a track that is entirely worthy of it's subject matter.

Luke Solomon is a bit of a legend round here. Brennan Green's remix is fast becoming legendary. Who say's "Legend" is banded aropund to easily these days?

The legend that is Primal Scream and the legend that is Andrew Weatherall join forces once again and don't disappoint. More legends then.

The De Reve was a situationist approach to navigating around a city in order to experience it in a different way. Not using a map or using a map of a different city were two approaches.

Take the beat from Monica Thornton's 'Give It Up' and merge it with Sun Ra Orchestra's 'Interplanetary Music' and this is what you get.
30. Mari Boine vs Mungolian Jetset – It Ain’t Necessarily Evil (Lunaflicks)
Mungolian Jetset team up with Norwegian Sami musician Mari Boine to create at once one of the miost amazing and also one of the most beautiful dancefloor gems of the year, if not years.
31. Nick Chacona/Anthony Mansfield – Oh Snap! (Greg Wilson Mix) (Hector Works)
Nick Chacona, Greg Wilson. A heady brew indeed.

Faze Action started life making gorgeous Balearic(y) disco music. Hypnotic, whilst not being actually hypnotic can hold a dancefloor under its spell..

Swedish singer-song-writer Jose Gonzalez was taken out for a night by Norwegian disco bod Todd Terje and this is what they wrote on the night bus home.

A perfect example of when an edit is more than just an edit. A massive re-working utilising the beat from G.B And The Tracks , 'My Kind Of Woman'.
35. The Revenge – Night Flight (Jisco)
Glasgow's The Revenge has been for many the man of the year, preaching the gospel that you don't need to play fast to keep a dancefloor moving. This Stevie Wonder edit prooving the point admirably.
36. Hedford Vachal – Toys (Tirk)
Nu Disco? We would rather not call it that, so lets just say that a couple of Portland residents have made some timeless sounding disco music.

Not an ode to the constantly flattering to deceive Francis Jeffers but cheeky little techie house number that pops up in all the write places.

Josh Wink might always be know for his massive hit 'Higher State Of Consciousness' but there be proof here that he is more than a one trick pony.
39. Deetron – Let’s Get Over It (Music Man)
Deetron might be disappointed to only make number 39 but they will have to get over it.
40. Buset – Stay (Sei A Mix) (Fine Art)
Haunting strings and hypnotic hand claps abound but it is all about THAT vocal, amazing stuff and only Busets second ever release.
41. Lee Jones – Mdmazing (Aus)
This is a really, really crap name for a record. Though when you listen to it almost seems to make sense. Still a rubbish name mind.
42. Mark E – Ray Gun (Jisco)
More slo-mo house musings from one of the standout labels of 2008 and the possible emergence of a new British talent to boot.
43. Panthers – Goblin City (Permanent Vacation)
We hope that the members of Panthers named this track as such due to their penchant for Jodhpurs, David Bowie and his castle at the end of the supposedly impossible maze.

Nerd and a hint of an achne problem might worry you all into some kind of time warp back to adolescence We weren't nerds though of course and neither was Jacques Renault.
45. Theo Parrish – Love Triumphant (Sound Signature)
Theo is always in these best-of-year charts. That is because he is pretty damn good. We predict he will be in the next two as well.
46. Rolling Stones – You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Columbia)
Classic Stones re-invented by a cast of modern disco dons. If tracks as good as this continue to be released then inspite of the title, maybe we can?
47. Juan McLean – Happy House (DFA)
The Juan McLean will do anything to appease the constant fighting of his flatmates, an easy life and a happy home. If you don't wish to become the negotiator then just put this on loud and ignore everyone.

Beachy Head it's just a track you can never get enough of, a bit like the beach really.
49. Linkwood – RIP (Prime Numbers)
Scottish label Prime Numbers announce their arrival in our chart, don't be fooled by the name they are far from pushing up daises
