Various - Wild Style (Mr Bongo)
Originally released in 1983, Wild Style is the original arthouse hip hop movie. Created on the fly by producer/director Charlie Ahearn alongside Fab Five Freddy, it sits somewhere between documentary and fiction (Freddy plays Phade in the movie). The accompanying soundtrack was produced by Blondie’s Chris Stein and Fab Five Freddy and featured many of the big names on the early ’80s New York rap scene. The soundtrack has been sampled by countless acts over the years, among them A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and Nas. This version was first released in 2007 by Mr Bongo to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the movie and included many previously unreleased tracks. Wild Style perfectly captures the early New York scene with brilliant, yet understated, production by Stein and the raw MCing of the early NYC rappers like Cold Crush Brothers, Busy Bee, plus the scratching skills of Grand Wizard Theodore and D.St. It is a classic.
